Weight Watchers

I've done Weight Watchers online in the past and I think it's a good tool....even better if you can make it to the meetings. Like any diet, if you stop watching what you eat and stop exercising...the weight will come back...which is what happened for me. I'm using "Alli" now...but, I know when I get to my goal weight....I need to work to stay there. I didn't last time.

wicki511 01-11-2010 08:09 AM

I was on weight watchers as well and i absolutely loved it. the most important thing about the program is the meetings, so if you don't have time for the meetings, perhaps this isn't the best plan for you. However, like any diet, support from other is vital and that is exactly what these meetings offer. You are all working towards the same goal so people understand you and are there to cheer you on even when you have weak moments. I even lost 5 pounds my first week! I hope you consider this program because it is true, they teach you a brand new lifestyle which does work in the long run as long as you stick to it. I kept the weight off for quite sometime, but then i got sick with something that causes weight gain, but now that I am better I am going to rejoin. I hope my feedback helped in some way. Good luck! :)

ILOVE2TEACHU2 01-11-2010 10:03 AM

Accountability is the best way to describe WW. If you go to the meetings knowing you have to weigh in, there is a better chance you will stay strick or true to your eating choices. I know on weigh in days I wasn't always ready for the results but the results are there whether you're ready or not.
My first week I lost 8 pounds which was a great motivator to keep going. Of course, as the weeks went on, the pounds settled out to 2 or 3 pounds a week. Even so, I was successful on WW, but gained the weight back after pregnancy, etc. It's been 9 years since that WW visit.

rmnsuk 01-12-2010 10:14 AM

In a BBC test a few years ago WW came out as one of the best diets. The procedures are good, but it's not cheap. I think you have to find one that suits you though.

The problem with all diets including WW is that unless you either change your eating habits, or stick to the dietting regime for the rest of your life you will eventually gain weight again. It's hard enough to lose weight, it's even harder to keep it off.

KatSmith6 01-13-2010 01:21 PM

I never paid for WW but had the books from a friend and counted points. I did this twice and lost weight, but eventually gained it back. I used slim fast bars, frozen dinners, and subway as the core of my diet but I never felt completely satisfied. I found it easy to "cheat" with WW.... eat food that was low in points and helped me lose weight, but wasn't the most nutritious. I always felt like I was eating my "diet" food rather than my "life" food. That made it tough to stick with. Now that I switched my eating lifestyle to fresh, healthy food, I have been much more successful. I guess I just hate the thought of diets and WW still seemed like a diet to me regardless of their marketing campaign.

kathietaylor 01-13-2010 03:39 PM

It also depends on your personality. One of my daughters, together with my sister, joined WWs....then they photocopied all their stuff and I did it with them without the meetings and I did fine...but then I lost all motivation and have since gained most of it back.

However my daughter found WWs made her very angry! She felt like WWs was telling her what to do, and she didn't like it. She is now a FitDay Member and she loves it. Her reasoning is that with FitDay it shows her what she IS doing, and she can decide for herself. I realize it is kind of silly, but that was her mindset.

Littlelorit 01-15-2010 08:51 AM

I started with WW on line just over 7 years ago and managed to lose all the weigth I wanted and then some. I gained a little bit back but was still within my ideal weight. After the birth of my 1st child I tried to restart it but because but never could quite get down to pre pregnancy weight. However, part of the problem was I get pregnant with my second child when the first was only 14 or 15 months old (they are 22 1/2 months apart). After my second child initially managed to lose down to my wedding weight but then between depression, stress, and trying to deal with two children I gained weight back. At one point I had stopped my subscription to WW because of finances but restarted it one year ago and this time it is not working. I have actually gained weight over the past year and am now down to the point I have had to buy clothes in order to have something to wear. Since finding FitDay a days ago and am hoping that with this, trying to get to the gym more often, and using some of WW ideas that this will be my year to lose.

Jaxdrisc 01-19-2010 09:22 AM

I have been on and off of WW for 2 years now, with little results. First I tried online only, then in Sept. decided to go to meetings. THe meetings are very helpful and being with others who also struggle helps you to feel less isolated. HOWEVER, the diet itself does not seem to work with my system. I have only lost 7 pounds in 4 months, following it very strictly and doing everything they suggested. It is very frustrating. And yes, I drank all of my water. I came here to Fitday to break down my diet more than their "points" to see if I could understand what was happening. I have learned that my fat and carbs are too high, my protein too low. For some, the points don't give enough info. and even if you are staying within their points, the weight wont come off. I am an avid ex. and work with weights as well so not ex. isn't an issue. Just be warned that if you don't see results, you may have to dig deeper to find out why. If there are others out there who have had this happen, I would love to hear from them because I feel pretty alone in this situation!:o

suzzirichardson 02-17-2010 07:53 PM

Weight watchers is a good program, I lost 30 lbs on it and have maintained it off for over 2 years. If you continue to use there rules as a guideline it is wonderful....If you go back to eating the same as before it can and may come back. It is a lifestyle change. I now have from 163 to 135 to go and gonna start using there guidelines again.

jinmo69 02-18-2010 03:40 AM

suzzirichardson - how funny! your "to/from" weight is EXACTLY where I am. A friend and I were looking at the Suzanne Somers diet, but I don't think I can live with her combinations. I had looked at the WW diet, but don't really want to commit that much $$ to a program. I like FitDay because I can track what I eat on my own. I know what foods are good and bad for me - just need to see it "in writing!"

Lizzycritter 02-18-2010 12:17 PM

We need to start a group, I'm 164 working toward 135:D

A good friend of mine lost 60 lbs on WW, but went off it and gained it back. She's back on it now, I don't know how much she's lost but I did notice her jeans are looser lately. Like anything else, you have to stick with it. I don't have the time/motivation for the meetings myself.

jinmo69 02-18-2010 01:49 PM

Glad to know I'm not alone! ;)

My mom and brother did the WW thing when my brother was a teenager. They both lost a lot of weight on it, but like others have said if you don't stick to healthy eating, the weight goes right back on - and then some. This is truly the first time in my life I have been as heavy as I am, except when I was pregnant, and it's a real mental struggle for me along with the physical struggle. I am trying to do this right at this time in my life and make the healthy habits stick.

jancamp09 02-18-2010 11:56 PM

I did weight watchers years ago (wasn't overweight - just wanted to trim down) and it worked great but like everything, you have to maintain. I'm now almost 54 and have never been as heavy as I am now. Last fall my doctor told me to lose 10 pounds - after that I gained five:eek: but I'm back on track now and have lost the 5 plus 6 so 4 pounds to go - however, I want to lose another 10 besides.
A friend of mine (that can think of any excuse why her current diet plan doesn't work) said the problem with weight watchers was that it didn't teach you proper eating. You could in theory get all you daily points from fat - I guess it is possible - though to me unlikely.
If you join weight watchers for say 3 months and recorded all you ate on FitDay you would have your points broken down to calories and if you averaged out how many calories kept you within those points, you would know what you should eat calorie wise. Some people need the support of meetings - if so then do what works for you - it is better then buying the expensive pre-packaged diet plans that don't teach you anything!

possiblyprodigy 02-28-2010 07:36 AM

I did it, and it worked, but I gained it back. I am however on it again because no other diets freaking work for me, I never go to the meetings or anything though, I just count points :]

sarahrun2007 03-23-2010 09:01 AM

I've been off and on weight watchers for awhile, but I just decided I couldn't afford it and hadn't lost any weight. I only want to drop 8-10 pounds, but they haven't gone anywhere! I was explaining to my fiance just a few minutes ago why I was excited to do fitday-I had two eggs for breakfast with a tiny bit of pam. Maybe not what I want to eat every day, but very tasty and filling. And only freakin' 140 calories. Whereas if I was still doing WW, that woudl be like four or five points. Just because no fiber and some fat. Those points constitute nearly 25% of my daily points. I'm hopeful that by monitoring my calories and focusing on getting enough protein and continuing my running the weight might eventually leave me. Although I have to say, at 31 the weight doesn't leave as quickly as it did at 25...

jmead821 03-26-2010 02:23 AM

WW is a good program

I used it in the past and lost 50 pounds. What I liked about it is that you can eat anything as long as you stay within the points range. At the meetings they do encourage healthy eating of course and my leader always had GREAT recipes. I have regained about 25 pounds but that is due to an injury which made it difficult to exercise and then I stopped counting points. I am currently able to start exercising again and am ready to lose the weight, however I am unemployed now and cannot afford the meetings even though they don't cost that much so I am trying to do what I know I need to do and use this site to help.

avelina 04-10-2010 03:46 AM

I've been on WW and think it's a great program. I stopped going due to the cost, it is expensive. I've gained weight back but that's me, not the program. The fact is that most people who lose weight don't keep it off, regardless of the plan they follow. The bonus with WW is you can go for free once you reach your goal.

That's interesting about your friend. I did WW for 6 months a few years back and they taught a LOT about healthy eating. You had to make sure you had at LEAST five servings of produce each day, and that you have LEAN servings of protein, and that you drink enough water...it goes on and on. We constantly talked about healthy eating at meetings, including recipe exchanges. Did she do online WW? Maybe they don't teach it there? I can't see it though with all the emphasis on it at meetings.

blackrhino2 04-25-2010 04:06 AM

i was 150 at my highest point and joined Weight Watchers with my mom during the summer before my senior year of college. I LOVED the meetings. I had such a fantastic leader. She made everything so easy to follow and i lost all the weight I wanted to lose. Then she had to quit bc WW refused to continue paying for her health benefits. Ever since then I have had a really hard time finding as good of a leader. For me the meetings make all the difference. It is a weekly checkpoint that really keeps me accountable. The support from the other members (if you have a friendly group) makes it incredibly valuable and humorous.

I recently joined Fitday.com and I love it! The people here seem to be amazing even tho I don't ever get to talk to them face-to-face. I think that this has replaced a lot of my need for having an inspirational leader because I have all of you!

Also, on Fitday.com I can eat more. I was down to only 18 points a day and I was gaining weight. I'm pretty sure this is bc I was not eating enough, mixed with eating crap at my boyfriend's apt. on the weekends. This program allows me a lot more daily calories which so far is working in my favor. I am aiming for around 1100 cals a day, a few hundred less than the "sedentary" calorie budget for my height and weight. I'm much more aware of carbs from fruits and veggies due to entering all my food into fitday rather than just using the WW points system. I also try to eat more fat now--all from healthy sources.

All in all I'd say that the combo is great for me. I don't own a scale so I go to the meetings for weekly weigh-ins. If I wasn't a Lifetime member (free) then I'm not sure I'd still go.

jillrider 04-26-2010 04:26 AM

Hi Sara- I've never written on this message board but saw your posting. I am also 30 (almost 31) and have done both weight watchers and fitday. I think fitday is a long-term sustainable way to stay at a healthy weight. I wanted to lose just a few pounds and found that exact calories in/vs. calories out used in fitday is a bit more accurate then WW (although that helped me figure out portion size!). Either way, wanted to say good luck!

Weight Watchers

I just started ww with a couple of co-workers. It's only been 3 weeks and i lost 6 lbs total. I really like ww. As long as you stick with the program you will get alot accomplished. :)

Weightwatchers Guru

Hiya ive been on and off with weightwatchers for nearly 7 years and i know it like the back of my hand. Ive got to admit its the only diet so far that i find i can stick too. I lost 3 stones in 6months without staying for meetings but the willpower got me through it and knowing somebody is weighing me each week. I left to do it on my own in november 09 and didnt lose any weight til 2weeks ago but this was my fault for not trying hard enough. I now use the points system along with the fitday advice and im back on my way to getting to goal. You need to be motivated and strict with yourself if sticking to a points allowance as its so easy to go over when choosing the wrong foods. It has given me a tool for life and i can now estimate the points in anything. Good Luck with any diet you use!!!

Currently doing WW at meeting center

I'm currently doing Weight Watchers at the meeting center and have lost over 60 pounds. I lost my job and could no longer afford e-Tools which is why I'm tracking at FitDay (and on paper).

Points are just one part of the program. The Good Health Guidelines are another. If you aren't following the GHGs, you aren't doing Weight Watchers (you are just paying for their proprietary information and doing your own program).

Weight Watchers focuses on "Filling Foods" (i.e., whole, unprocessed foods) and activity (it doesn't have to be a formal workout at a gym). Do some people need to "tweak" it a bit to get the results they want? Yes, within reason. One can tweak the points to keep it lower-carb, or lower-fat, or higher-protein in how/where they "spend their points" (i.e., they may spend more points on protein sources and fewer on fruits and whole grains) however if done as written, the program is very balanced.

If you aren't tracking your intake, you aren't on WW.
If you aren't getting in all your GHGs, you aren't on WW.

If you do the program half-way, you can expect half-way results.

Didnt read the other posts..Just wanted to say it worked for me few years back BUT once I stopped attending the meetings--I stopped losing weight. If you DONT plan on attending the meetings--just use FD. Same thing --same idea with charting as on WW web page. This may actually be even better.

If you have time to join and go to the meetings..it is nice. They are motivating and the "pressure" to weight in each week was enough to keep me in line! LOL!

But --once I stopped the meetings the weigh ins were not far behind...then...I did all kinds of cheating..

GL to you!

maryrac 06-18-2010 06:52 AM

you WILL lose weight on WW but the problem is you are starving the whole time! which means, the minute you are off you will gain the weight back if youre not careful

WW is essentially a calorie restriction plan encoded with their point system. IMHO, you can get the same information from a variety of sources without having to pay for their program. As others have mentioned, however, there is a motivational factor to the meetings, and that is worth the money for some people. I tried WW a couple of years ago and it did work for some degree for me. I didn't like the point system at all, so I did the core plan (which, as I understand, they did away with). I actually found myself leaning more towards carb restriction on that core plan, and lost 16 pounds in the couple of months that I was participating. I actually didn't like the meetings though. I was the only man in there, surrounded by women complaining about emotional eating problems that I just couldn't relate to. Nowadays, I am following the Atkins diet and doing much better with it. My fiancee' swears that Atkins is a "guy" diet and WW is a "girl" diet, and this would seem true as we can both measure our successes much better according to her theory.

I realize this is blatant SPAM, but here are a couple of quotes from that website:

"High carbohydrate, Isometric, food combining, food separating, high protein, Ketogenic are just a few types of diets we combined with work out routines."
(I hope you see the self-contradiction in that statement)

"Hollywood Stars have mastered the art and science of losing body fat, while keeping muscle doing exactly this, using the proven program which has been used time and time again."
"On TV you are always hearing about the so called 'secret' diet and workout plans of the rich and famous and this is exactly that"
(Not that "Hollywood stars" are the most reliable source for scientific information, but what makes this different than any of the other dozens of "Hollywood star diets" that litter the magazine covers?)

I think most of the people coming to this website already have some kind of nutrition plan in place, and for you to use this forum for blatant advertising purposes (which also attempts to discredit whatever plan someone is already using) is shameful.

Dave,

WW definitely still has the CORE plan intact. I have Type 1 diabetes and am very very very diligent with how I track my carbs (though I don't need to lose weight and track on FitDay generally to keep very close watch on my food choices each day; I've been tracking here every day for six years), and many of the members of the different online diabetes support forums (most of which are made up of T2s who often do need to lose weight and limit carbs to an even greater extent than I do) and whenever I've seen someone discussing WW, they've always mentioned the CORE plan as well as the points plan.

Hum... i see that most of the people are saying something about the meeting... to be honest with you guy i really have no time and money to assist the meeting my friend brought me all the books i try a few time but i have a hard time to mesure everything and also when it come to make a recipes my god it takes me for ever so i get depress and i stop...!!!
