10 Ways You Didn't Know You Could Use Bananas

Bananas are a nutritious and inexpensive food, here are some ways to use them!

Did you know that there are more than 1,000 different types of bananas in the world? They range super sweet varieties to dense options like plantains. With all the many different types of bananas in the world, there are many different and surprising ways that you can use them!

Bananas are typically very nutrient dense and can be a very good addition to your diet. They are fat-free and contain a small amount of protein. They also are high in vitamins B6 and C as well as, minerals like manganese and potassium. Potassium is an important mineral because it helps to regulate the fluid and mineral balance inside and outside of cells, as well as helps to transmit nerve signals.

Below are some fun and different ways to use bananas.

1. Freeze sliced bananas and then blend them into a creamy “ice cream.” Top with your favorite toppings like nuts and chocolate sauce.

2. Make banana chocolate pudding! Blend pureed bananas with the chocolate pudding for an extra tasty treat.

3. Freeze them for later and add them to your peanut butter and banana soymilk smoothie for a protein packed tasty breakfast.

4. Why only make banana bread?! Try making banana cake with pudding or cream cheese filling between the cake layers.

5. Cut thin slices and add them to your breakfast pancakes. Start with putting the banana pieces in the frying pan prior to pouring in the batter, so the bananas sugar gets lightly browned.

6. Make banana fritters with plantains or sweet bananas.

7. Bake them into cookies or muffins. Often you can substitute bananas in recipes for eggs, fats or sweetener. Try your favorite muffin recipe by swapping a ripe banana for one of the eggs!

8. Mash cooked plantains into a mashed potato like texture and use as a replacement in your meal for potatoes!

9. Use plantain flour as a replacement for wheat flour in your tortillas or chips.

10. Make banana boats by peeling back the top of the banana, remove a small wedge of banana and then fill with marshmallows, chocolate chips, and nuts. Replace the peel and then roll in foil and bake in the oven or over a campfire!
