What You Need to Know About the Smart Condom

The i.Con Smart Condom company website claims "The future of your sex life starts here." Does it?

Somewhere between a Fitbit and an old-fashioned prophylactic is the world’s very first intelligent condom: the i.Con Smart Condom. A U.K.-based company pioneered this wearable technological device for your man bits, which uses sensors and a nano-chip to allow users to measure their “performance” and detect STDs.

In case you’ve been secretly contemplating how many calories you burn when you’re getting busy, the smart condom has an answer for you. It can also tell you your penis girth, how many times you have sex per week, month, or year, the number of positions you try, and the velocity and frequency of your thrusts. And if you’ve ever wondered how you stack up against other men in the bedroom, the i.Con has an answer for that, too.

It isn’t actually a condom. It’s an adjustable synthetic rubber ring that fits over your “dumb” condom. The nano-chip and sensors are protected inside a tiny, waterproof carbon fiber casing.

The battery-powered i.Con can provide between six and eight hours of live usage, so keep it, er, quick. Once your sesh is over, data can be downloaded onto a smartphone application via Bluetooth or a micro-USB chip. Users can then use the app to compare their performance metrics to those of other worldwide users. (Sounds healthy, doesn’t it?)

If you’re not interested in your sex stats, the i.Con can also give you timely information about your STD status. A filter allows the condom to detect antibodies that could be indicators of common infections including chlamydia and syphilis.

Though all data is by default anonymous, users are given the option to share their data with friends, acquaintances, and even the world. (If you thought unsolicited pics was bad, get ready for getting spammed with “stats” the next time you go on Tindr.)

The device, which was introduced in 2015 and is now shipping to the U.S., is the latest in a series of wearable technology. It will sell for around $74 when it’s released in the U.S. later this year.
