Why You Should Never, Ever Pick Your Spots

No one enjoys seeing spots appear on their face, and they always seem to happen at the worst time. But a pimple is your body’s reaction to dealing with something that should not be there, and as tempting as it may be to start squeezing them, this is probably the worst thing you can do for your skin.

According to The Independent, around 80 percent of teenagers struggle with pimples, and acne is one of the most common inflammatory skin conditions in adolescents. While Daily Mail notes that by the mid-twenties, hormone levels have usually stabilized and breakouts are less common, it’s not just adolescents that suffer from pimples! So, the next time you think about destroying that pimple, you should also think about the infection and possible scarring you could cause by doing this.

Most of us already know that picking spots is bad (although sometimes the relief that comes with squeezing a pimple is too hard to resist), and dermatologists warn against picking at your face because, as Allure notes, you could potentially tear your skin, or push the bacteria, oil, and debris even further, which could result in a much bigger pimple. It's not just a larger pimple that could happen, but a worse breakout as the bacteria, oil, and debris can spread, and you will also be introducing dirt into a pimple from your fingers.

And one of the of the biggest reasons for not picking a spot is that the scarring could be permanent and difficult to treat. The Independent notes that if you do not pick your spots, your body will usually take care of them naturally, and in a week or two they should disappear. You can also concentrate on preventing spots by eating a healthy, balanced diet, choosing oil-free cleansers, and trying not to over exfoliate the skin.
