Low impact exercises are often thought of as only being beneficial to the elderly. In reality, this could not be further from the truth. As the name suggests, low impact exercise is a type of exercise where the amount of stress placed upon the joints of your knees, hips and ankles is relatively minimal.

Benefits of Low Impact Exercises

Though low impact exercise is often practiced by the elderly, who suffer from arthritis and other conditions which can make stresses to the joints very painful, low impact exercise may also benefit individuals who have recently suffered an injury. Swimming is a great example of low impact exercise that is often chosen by athletes who have suffered a stress fracture. The athlete is still able to participate in cardiovascular exercise, without putting high amounts of weigh on the injured body part.

Examples of Low Impact Exercise

As discussed above, swimming is a great example of low impact exercise. However, it is not the only option available to you. Using an elliptical, arm ergometer or even bicycle are all other, great, easy forms of low impact exercise that can help to improve your cardiovascular health and muscular strength, while decreases stresses on the joints. Consult with a personal trainer or gym employee for further examples of great forms of low impact exercise.
