Everything You Need to Know About Golden Milk Tea

Drinking a beverage referred to as "Golden Milk Tea" sounds appealing, but you may be asking does it live up to the hype, and what exactly is in it?

Despite some beauty treatments (like the 24K gold facial) making us think that there’s a possibility of this tea being infused with actual gold, the word “golden” is actually referring to turmeric, which gives the beverage it’s rich color. The drink has been gaining popularity recently — and if you glance at Instagram you may find the most beautiful turmeric lattes and teas you’ve ever seen — but the recipe is a traditional Ayurvedic drink.

There are believed to be many benefits to drinking this drink, which Healthline notes is made with warmed cows milk or plant-based milk (specifically coconut milk), turmeric, and other spices. Among these benefits is the active component found in turmeric called curcumin, which is an antioxidant, and can help fight off disease and promotes overall well-being.

Another benefit of this beverage is the anti-inflammation properties it contains. According to Healthline, the “anti-inflammatory of curcumin are comparable to those of some pharmaceutical drugs with none of the side effects.” Having a diet rich in anti-inflammatory compounds could help with a number of conditions, from heart disease to metabolic syndrome.

Other reasons to drink golden milk include the ability to improve memory and aid learning, improve blood pressure and reduce LDL cholesterol, ease arthritis pain, and help to fight free-radical damage, Nature’s Path reports. Natural Living Ideas also notes that this beverage could improve the reproductive health of women because turmeric “acts as a mild phytoestrogen” which could increase fertility for those women who have a hormonal insufficiency.

Curcumin may even make you feel better and could reduce symptoms of depression. Healthline notes that the compound has been used in research of individuals with depressive disorders
