6 of the Strangest Drug Side Effects

Most people will be prescribed drugs by a medical professional at some stage in their lives, but these drugs do not always work without side effects. While most drugs have common side effects like dizziness, nausea and muscle aches, there are sometimes other side effects that are really strange.

Viagra is a drug that many people associate with sexual performance, however, it is also a drug that can leave you with cyanopsia, a blue-tinted vision. According to Oddee, the drug increases the sensitivity of the rods in the eye, which are more successful at picking up green and blue light.

Another unpleasant side effect, according to Oddee, is associated with taking Pepto Bismol, used to treat upset stomachs. For some, this medication can result in a black, fuzzy tongue. There’s also a metallic taste in your mouth, which is not exactly appealing.

According to Everyday Health, one of the effects of prescription drugs can be hallucinations, which can be terrifying for the individual experiencing them because they start to see and hear things that are not there. The publication claims that a drug that is commonly responsible for hallucinations is Lunesta (eszopiclone), but the drug Lexapro (escitalopram), which is used to treat depression, has also been reported to have this unpleasant effect.

Your urine is not meant to be green or purple, but some drugs can result in different colors when you go to the bathroom. According to How Stuff Works, purple urine is a side effect of taking phenolphthalein, green can be a result of the drug Elavil, and Dyrenium could result in blue urine.

If you wanted to quit smoking, in the past you may have been prescribed Chantix (or Varenicline) but according to Men’s Health, researchers have found evidence that many people taking this drug have suffered from suicidal behaviors or depression. The publication notes that the drug now has a “black box” warning.

Men’s Health also reports that the drug Ropinirole, also known as Requip, which is used to treat Parkinson’s disease has been found to have an extreme effect on some people, making them fall asleep during the day. According to the publication, the medication guide for the product notes that patients have reported fallen asleep in the middle of their day to day activities — so you should not be driving or operating heavy machinery while taking this medication.
