6 Creams Your Post-Workout Routine Needs

You already know the importance of not wearing makeup while working out, but of equal importance is your post-workout skin care routine. First, jump into a lukewarm shower and wash off the sweat from your face and body. Then pat your skin dry, and apply a gentle cleanser, followed by a moisturizer — it's necessary to apply a moisturizer to help replenish the water that your skin lost during the workout.

The post-workout face care sounds simple, right? But with so many products on the market how do you know which ones are best?

Firstly, it's important to remember that your skin is going to be more sensitive than usual following a workout, and this should affect the products that you use. The best tip here is to apply a moisturizer for your skin type. You don't want to clog your pores (especially if you're breakout prone) so one of the best ways to prevent this is to use an oil-free moisturizer like the Boscia's Green Tea Oil-free Moisturizer (a lightweight oil-controlling moisturizer with green tea). Or, Origins' Zero Oil™ Oil-Free Moisture Lotion, which reduces shine and gives the skin a matte finish.

However, if your skin is naturally dry, then opt for something a little richer, but quick drying. Some great options are Fresh's Rose Deep Hydration Face Cream which is designed to give dry skin a moisturizing boost. Also try the thick and creamy, Lala Retro™ Whipped Cream by Drunk Elephant.

Go easy on the makeup following your workout and allow your skin to breathe, but if you do need makeup keep it simple and natural. If you're applying makeup purely to reduce the redness after the workout, there are skin serums and moisturizers that can help aid this: Search for ones with soothing ingredients like aloe vera, azulene or white tea. A top rated serum is Coola's Classic Face Sport SPF 50 - White Tea (good for normal, sensitive, combination and dry skin) which will help reduce the appearance of redness.

And if you're planning on headed back into the sun, it's advisable to put on something with an SPF. Try out Supergoop! Defense Refresh Setting Mist Broad Spectrum SPF 50 — it has a beautiful rosemary and mint fragrance, helps prevent oiliness and more importantly will protect your skin from UV rays.
