Anybody on Alli?

Just seeing who's out there, and the affects they've had.. (not just THOSE).... lol. I'm on day 3, I ate tacos (binged) right before I started so I'm excusing my 2lb gain here...but getting back on track.

So, anything interesting for those of you out there? Tips on exercise to go with it? meal ideas?

Tachran 02-03-2010 02:42 PM

I'm using Alli. I used it a few years ago when it first came out. I like it because it "forces" me to change my eating habits! Also, I get to eat 1600 calories so I don't feel that hungry or deprived. I started again last Sunday. I need to start exercising but am focusing on the food for now. I'll add exercise in a few weeks when I get this down!

grizzly51 02-04-2010 09:45 AM

I am and have been since Jan 1 2009. I've lost 55 pounds on it so far. I was dismayed when alli took down their website right before the holidays and wiped out all of our discussions. We all had a ton of support there and now everyone has disappeared.

I use fitday to keep track of the percentages of fat, calories and protein needed to stay healthy. You must be careful that you don't overdo the carbs when you lower the fat. You should also maintain a low fat diet for at least a week before starting alli or you may be in for some unpleasantness.

The worst that I've ever had was just stomach cramps from gas. The threat of public humiliation is a wonderful deterrant! Good luck to you!

The Alli Diet

I just started my diet yesterday and searching for a diet plan to follow. I was at the Dollar Store and found The alli Diet plan book. I haven't read it yet, but do you recommend this one? Are you taking their diet pills? Since I have the book, I was just curious as to whether you like their diet before I purchas their pills;)

grizzly51 02-04-2010 10:08 AM

Check out their website.
You will get better information there.
I do not follow their food, I only follow their recommended percentages. Alli is not something to go into lightly; you should really educate yourself about the program first and prepare for it.
I also hate their recipes on their website; they are too hard to follow and are for too many calories. I called them on it and it is geared for people use to eating 3000+ cal a day which I could never do and have never done. So it is best to design what works for you but understand what alli is doing. All it is doing is blocking about 1/3 of the fat from being absorbed so theoretically you can eat more fat, less carbs etc. Many of us also feel it works on stored fat but there is no proof.

I also don't eat any processed or artificial food. I eat real foods, nothing fake and if real foods are too fattening (like butter) I just don't eat it period. It is not that big of a deal.

Especially knowing it is not forever. Also one usually loses quickly in the beginning on Alli then it slows down. 1 - 2lbs a week is the better rate to lose because you are learning to eat properly and in a way where it won't come back.

I hope this helps...

Tachran 02-05-2010 12:03 PM

I wondered what happened to the website. I used it when I first used alli a few years ago. Now I can't log on or even create a new account. I would use their meal plans as ideas of what to have. Also, back then, they would have meals that were designed for the calorie target you had. I just started again on Sunday and am eating 1600 calories/day. I definitely agree that you should learn all about the alli plan before starting the pills. If you do, you shouldn't have any problems with it. I also lost quickly the first 2 weeks and then it slowed. That kind of help me jumpstart into weight loss and was a good encouragement.

heavensdarkangel 02-06-2010 06:20 AM

My plan thus far...

Well, I've been on Alli for over a week, am down 4lbs, probably would have been more if I hadn't fallen off a bit... but it's doing well, and no bad effects. I know it will slow down, it does no matter what I'm doing... body gets used to things. I feel positive about this and am continuing the program. :)

As for the site, I can go to it now and am a member, but things I post just don't go in, or disappear...whole forums disappear, as well as many changes that I make to my profile. I got tired of trying to fix it.

heavensdarkangel 02-06-2010 06:22 AM

uhm...

sorry, I meant whole threads disappear...

Tachran 02-07-2010 04:26 AM

Great job losing 4 lbs!! I just weighed in for my first week and am down 2 lbs. I've stayed on the plan. I just turned 50 and can tell that my metabolism has really changed the last year and a half. Anyway, my goal is to lose 22 pounds by the end of June. I started at 172 and want to be at 150 by then. After that I need to lose another 10 and then I'd be happy. What are your goals?

heavensdarkangel 02-08-2010 03:02 AM

Goals...

I'm 242 today (oops up one from yesterday). My goal is to get to 150 (long term)... but this year I'd like to lose about 50lbs at least ... my new years resolution...only one I've ever made. This week... or at least for the next week, I'm working on being under 240... so I can take a tag off my weight loss chart. :)

heavensdarkangel 02-08-2010 03:04 AM

Alli...

Well, last night was the first time I've had treatment effects, my third time eating what I shouldn't. If any of you have eaten what they shouldn't, do you find that it hurts the stomach later? I find it hurts... and I wonder if some of the physical issues people are having are from not following the plan and maybe their organs can't handle that? any ideas?

grizzly51 02-08-2010 06:06 AM

It is from gas and not hurting the organs. They claim it doesn't go into the blood stream. If you know you are going to cheat then don't take it. Even then, you may have some symptoms if you had taken some that day....

I don't take the full recommended dosage. If I don't eat over 7 grams of fat in a meal, I don't take it. You will learn what your body can tolerate and what it can't. Think of your symptoms as a deterrant. Remember them before you cheat again.

You really need to be serious if you are going to take alli. Today is a new day. I hope you do better....

grizzly51 02-08-2010 06:11 AM

Heavensdarkangel....I lost 55 lbs in one year on Alli so you CAN do it! Some people lost more but I did what worked for me. A few months I just maintained. My exercise started slow (I was 247 when I started) and I worked up. I have some physical issues from old breaks so I could only do so much (started walking up hills everyday). Remember, the slower you lose the more chance you have of keeping it off.

They revamped the alli website over the holidays. They took down all of our forums (and support) right before xmas which really stank. The site is still dysfunctional and I'm not using it anymore. It is too bad, it use to be pretty good with just some issues here and there. Now they've taken away groups of people who use to support each other. I hope they get their act together soon....

Tachran 02-08-2010 09:11 AM

Hi Heaven, I have had gas pains sometimes when taking alli. I never have more than 13 grams of fat per meal but usually keep it to around 9 grams. If I know that I might go over the fat grams I don't take the pill either for about 24 hours. But, the reason I'm doing alli is that I know I will have side effects if I cheat so it keeps me in line. Otherwise it's to easy for me to give in on diets. You can do it! Just plan ahead and read all food labels.

I'm still trying to get to the alli forums. I am having serious problems doing that. Keep going Grizzly- you've done great. Your progress is an inspiration to me.

1 week down, 2 pounds lost.

heavensdarkangel 02-08-2010 09:40 AM

Ok...

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. I don't have a lot of side affects of any kind either way. Most of my meals are pretty low fat, also low calorie.... I just have those days sometimes....

I'm liking Alli so far, I'm just wary because of concerns and evaluations being done about issues with kidneys and liver (?) function ... they're trying to figure out if it causes it or is just made worse by it.

I'm glad that so many people have had success with the product, this is the first I've had much faith in and it's reviews from people like you that tell what really works.

:)

rmnsuk 02-08-2010 09:55 AM

I've been taking alli for 3-4 weeks. It is the best thing for giving feedback on bad eating habits! I try to limit fat as much as possible, but I end up with 30% anyway. The main problem is that I forget to take it!

Been losing well until this week when I lost 1/2 pound only. I'll keep at it and hopefully get back on track next week. I haven't been cheating so far as I can tell, so it's probably just stress. I had a very stressy week at work.

mikenickmattsmom 02-24-2010 12:14 PM

Hi, I started taking ALLI yesterday. I have gained 50 pounds over the past 10 years, that really needs to come off. I have dieted on & off over the years, and I do really well for 2-3 weeks and then give up. I am not a gym person, so it really takes alot for me to go. I have researched this product and I want to make this work for me. I experienced in the first morning, "effects", maybe that was from the night before, it hasn't happened since. I anyone has some good pointers with this diet I would be very interested in what you have to say.....Thanks..

heavensdarkangel 02-28-2010 03:30 PM

Hello...

it's me again! Sorry, I come here less often than the other site as far as chatting about things is concerned. So, let's see here... it's been approximately a month now...I'm 235lbs, and really I've been going over my calorie limit off and on and fighting this particular number. I'd bet that I'd have made 20lbs lost by now if I'd have behaved better. Either way, in total I'm down from 250-235 making this a 15 lb loss for the month. Yes, still on Alli.

I've never read the book but thinking of getting it just to check it out. You wouldn't believe how easy it is to go over the fat limit for me. I think I knew I had a high fat diet, but I didn't know that even when I behaved before Alli, it was still high fat!!!

Anywho, had some effects... tonight namely passing gas was a bad idea (cheeseburger and a few fries...was not the best idea after all. I had a short bout with losing some hair... yes more than normal. I have very thick hair so I wasn't too alarmed. I'm guessing it was my vitamin. I checked it out and it lacks some essentials for hair growth.

BTW if any of you didn't know about it... it definitely blocks vitamins and essential fats, so it's always best to check that out. I mean for some maybe it won't but it looks pretty likely.

I find that if I eat things I shouldn't sometimes my stomach hurts. It also appears that exercise is really helpful for the process. Anything else that you might be interested in just give me a holler. :)

almeeker 03-04-2010 01:51 PM

I bought the stuff....

I got some Alli too, and then read the material that came with it and got scared to try it. So I started my diet without it and have been doing pretty well. I do like their little book for tracking calories, it's perfect for my purse or pocket. Then I started noticing that every Monday morning I was up a couple of pounds and for the most part over the weekends I'm pretty good about what I eat. It turns out the trouble is this little diner where we eat brunch on Sunday. I don't know exactly how they cook everything, but it must have a lot more fat than it does when I cook at home. So now I take an Alli with Sunday brunch and no longer have the "up every Monday morning" syndrome.

tinamariemcb 03-04-2010 11:50 PM

I started taking Alli at the begining of the week and so far I haven't had any of the side effects. I did gain 2 pounds this week, but I don't think that had anything to do with the Alli. I mainly started taking them because of the medication that my Dr. put me on....weight gain is common with it, so I was trying to counteract the medication. I've also been working out 7 days a week, so I could just be building muscle. There could be alot of reasons for my weight gain this week.....hopefully next week will be better.

I just started today. Im not to sure on it yet. whats your strategy? lol

Konababe 03-09-2010 12:24 PM

I'm starting my second week of Alli. I read the books that came with the kit thoroughly. If you have these that come with the starter kit, there is no need to buy other books. The books stress the importance of deciding to be committed to a low fat diet while taking Alli and spells out the number of grams of fat per meal. It also emphasizes that people should not store up or save fat grams to splurge on a dessert or it will backfire. It is strongly suggested that people follow a low fat diet a week before beginning to take Alli.

I have not had any of the treatment effects. I count fat grams carefully. As instructed in the materials, I take my vitamin pill at bed time. I've lost five pounds in two weeks but expect it to slow down as I'm a slow loser usually.

I will say that several years ago I took the prescription version of this but quit because I did not have the dedication to stick with an extreme low fat diet required for that dosage.

heavensdarkangel 03-10-2010 12:12 AM

Alli check in and stuff...

So, let's see here... I've been on Alli for...5 weeks or so. I've lost 17lbs... was 19 lbs but I ate too much food the other day.... It's tough to break a habit sometimes. There will always be times when I do this, I just need to work on it. I'd probably have lost more if I was better about it but most of the time I behave.

Now, on to other things. I try to eat fruit most mornings or if I need something more substantial I'll go for a couple of eggs and a half slice cheese. Once in a while a bowl of cereal or oatmeal. I drink a lot of crystal light, it's more tolerable to me than water, but some are not comfortable with substitute sugars.

At lunch I might have a half a sandwich or whole depending on the bread and what I put in it. I might have a salad... or really any vegetable. I try to stay away from cheese most of the time, vegetable oil (high fat content) and regular mayo.

Dinner tends to be whatever we're having. This is hard because evening and night are the worst times for me.. I binge terribly. It takes all I have not to go for seconds.

I try not to snack, but some people benefit from smaller broken down meals...not me, because I'm a binge eater, and because by nightfall I'll feel empty.

HolaKitty 03-12-2010 06:04 AM

I just started taking Alli a week ago and I'm REALLY struggling to remember to take the pills! Is it just me? Does anyone have any tips about remembering to take them?

heavensdarkangel 03-12-2010 10:21 AM

taking pills...

Well, up until Alli I had this problem... but the obsession with making this work is helping it along. I keep mine on the kitchen counter so I have to look at them when I'm preparing meals. Most of the time it helps!

viviangoodson 04-22-2010 03:39 PM

I'm so grateful to have found this discussion thread. I started taking Alli on Monday, April 19, 2010. I have two books and all the pamphlets from the starter kit and out of all of them I find the starter kit the most helpful. I went to the myalli website, but it really was of no use. I found it more confusing and frustrating than anything.

I know that I've not been doing this the right way so far, but I'm figuring babysteps is the best way for me. I'm making my own menus using my normal cookbooks and taking the pill with each high fat meal. So far I've had no treatment affects. I'm doing good keeping my food journal and even count each cup of coffee which has always been my weakness.

I've not been exercising though. I'm going to work on that next week. My plan at the moment is to take my dog on a mile walk each day and to do some pilates every other day.

It's tough not to check my weight daily. I'm so eager to see if this pill works. I wake up and my first thought is the scale. I broke down today even though I really didn't want to and weighed myself. The scale said that I've lost 3 pounds since Monday. It's exciting, but I'm not getting my hopes up too much. It's still too early to be able to tell anything.

farahb7 04-23-2010 01:59 AM

Hi,
i was on Alli for a while too. it just did not work for me. i usually have a lot of fruits and veggies in a day and have a very low fat diet too, so i guess there wasn't much for Alli to block! never experienced any side effects but did have cramps because of the gas.
i have saved the remaining pills for the time that i think i have high fat meals.
my start weight with Alli was 153.8, after 2 months of taking the pill religiously, i just dropped to 152.6
i'm trying to find a low carb diet, hoping that might help me, so if anyone has any info about low carb diets or foods, please let me know!
good luck to all of you!

dstamnitz 04-26-2010 08:47 AM

I've been using Alli for about 6 months, and I can't really say it has done much for me. Maybe without it I would have actually gained instead of staying the same? The side effects for me have been mild and manageable. I think my caloric intake is more of my problem than the grams of fat I end. (That's probably why my side effects have been so minor.) I just bought another bottle, so I'm still hopeful I'll get some results from it.

anewme38 05-09-2010 01:48 PM

I have just started using Alli on friday the 7 of May would love to find some other people that is on it to chat with and keep each other motivated. I have about 60 pounds I would like to lose. I have lost 40 on another diet but have come to a stand still and no matter what I do I can not lose another pound. So hoping Alli will help.

Conquerette 05-18-2010 08:47 AM

Been on the Alli plan for a little more than a week

And I have been following the program pretty closely. I began with the low fat/calorie diet plan they recommend for the first 3-4 days before I started taking the pills. I have been taking the pills now for about 4 days now. I had one day where the treatment effects were horrible! But I had splurged the night before, big time! It was awful!! Enough to make sure I never do that again! :) So far, I have lost 3 pounds, which I think is pretty good. I am 192 pounds at 5'3", but I am very muscular. My goal weight is 170, but I would love to get to 160 (that's a size 8/10 for me), but I will be very happy at 170, which is about 7 pounds less than my pre-pregnancy weight.

So I am interested to see how Alli will work for me. I see that it's not a "quick fix", which is a good thing, I guess. We are less likely to gain the weight back again if it comes off slowly.

I started taking Alli a week ago again. I took it before but, I forgot to take it, too. What's helped me the most this week, was changing my banner on my phone to "take your Alli pill" because I always check my phone when I sit down to eat or take a break. So that helped. Or also leaving yourself little notes in places that you frequently eat at or see helps too.

cazattack 06-22-2010 04:29 AM

two years ago, i had lost about 15 pounds from counting calories and eating more vegetables/fruits/fiber and healthy fat. it was really hard to go out with people though and watch them eat whatever they wanted (especially as i worked with kids in a program where we had to supply them food). i started to plateau and it was so frustrating.
I ended up starting alli to give me another kickstart, and it allowed me to, on occasion splurge and have say, a half slice of pizza with the kids i worked with, on occasion. took me a few months but i lost another 15-20 pounds before i stopped.

one caution though, i stopped because i was having problems with my gallbladder. My dr suggested it was due to the alli and since i was in a healthy range (im 5'10" at that point was about 158) i decided to stop. in the two years since ive only gained 4-5 pounds of it back. but since i never hit the weight i wanted to (150, still in healthy range, but not disgustingly scrawny), i recently started counting calories again and doing more aerobic exercise. I never stopped eating healthier, and i never forgot what portions should be. i think if anything , that was the greatest benefit of alli.

also hungry girl cookbook, i strongly recommend that as well. She has some yummy concoctions you wouldn't know were healthy and low calorie/low fat.

rcburto 10-19-2011 01:26 PM

I started dieting on 8-21-11 using portion control and a rebounder for exercise. I lost 10 lbs in 2 months and wanted to speed things up so I tried Alli. I gained 4 lbs the week I was on it. That made me mad. On the last day i tried to get some "treatment effects" by eating high-fat all day with nachoes, bacon, eggs, biscuits, gravy, fried potatoes, etc. and NOTHING happened. That's when I quit using it.

I just googled this:

Alli is pronounced "ally" -- as in friend or associate. And as its name suggests, Alli is merely one component of a new weight loss program.

More than just a pill, the Alli program involves a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet, regular walking and toning exercises, and behavioral changes. It comes with a companion book called Are You Losing It? Losing Weight Without Losing Your Mind, along with other weight loss material and online support. The drug's manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline, is going all out with a splashy marketing plan that includes a museum-style exhibit in Manhattan demonstrating a dieter's experience before and after the addition of Alli.

viviendoparahoy 11-14-2011 05:03 AM

I went from 318 to 287 using Alli. The side effects are not bad. You really have to eat a lot of fat to have bad side effects (like a whole bag of chips)!
