smaller portions

I have found that since starting to try and eat correct portion, if I uses a smaller bowl or a smaller plate it helps "trick my mind" into thinking there is more on the plate than is really there because the plate looks full>>>hope this helps some one;)

Good idea

That is a good idea, speaking of portions, can anyone advise how to cook rice and spaghetti, i know how to prepare both but it seems that when i make it, there is enough to feed a small army, we are only 2 people but end up with past and rice for about 6. Every time i make it i try and judge but always get it wrong and we end up eating more than we should.

Talk doesn't cook rice!

Bring 2 C water to a full, bubbling boil. Add 1 C brown rice (I like organic short grain). Stir i the rice and let bubble on high for one minute. Cover the pot with a tight lid and reduce heat to the lowest simmer for 45 minutes. Don't open the pot to check the rice until at least 40 minutes. A serving is 1/2 C cooked and this will make about four servings. We use it as a side dish to fish and then the next day use the cold rice leftover on a big salad. Sorry, we don't eat spaghetti.

Samantha-Lee, weigh the dried pasta on your food scale, then throw just the amount you want into the pot.

Not as much a portion thing, but this little article changed the way I think about cooking brown rice. Ugh! It used to take so long and it might not even turn out that great! This article took the guess work out of it for me and it turns out awesome every time. I'm not associated with the website in any way, just sharin' the love...

As far as portions go, 1/4 cup dry rice is enough for one person. For pasta, I usually divide the box into portion controlled ziplock bags (I use small rubber bands for long noodles like spaghetti). Before I had a food scale, I just looked at how many portions were in a give box (usually between 6 and 8) and then equally divided the contents using measuring cups. As Cassie said, using a food scale to do this is a million times easier.
