Hey Mike, just wanted to let you know that you're a huge inspiration to me (and a lot of other people), and hoping for a quick recovery.
Can you use an excersize bike, or does the sitting hurt? You can get the ones where you're sitting back and half kinda lying down, that might be okay for you.
Anyway, thinking of you and please keep us all updated.

Mike, so sorry to hear about your news. I do hope you get some relief from the pain soon. Surely the chiropractor and being cautious will make you feel better. Take care of yourself.

What beach do you like? We're looking for a new family vacation spot that doesn't entail too much travel this year, due to various other commitments and timetables. You're in SC, right? Got any suggestions?
Oh my goodness you asked the right person! I live 30 mins from Isle of Palms, Sullivan's Island, and Folly beach.

It really all depends on what you are looking for since each beach has its own personality.

IOP: (Close to Mt. Pleasant)
-near county park: Crowded, lots of frantic soccer moms.
-away from county park: beautiful houses, good sand for jogging.

Sullivan's: (Close to Mt. Pleasant)
-Near IOP, huge houses, ideal for wind surfing and long walks on the beach without seeing anyone

Folly: (Close to West Ashley)
-Known for surfing (we have Jimmy Buffet!), tends to be popular with drug users, a mix of houses of every size, traffic on and off the island via car is a nightmare during peak hours.

Edisto: Good hour and a half drive away from Charleston
-Great for kayaking, known once as "Fossil Beach" because of all the sharks teeth, known for tiger shark population, good mixture of house sizes, and lots of local spirit.

2. 6 hours of exercise. 0 min, 50 min (total ):50)
3. 96 oz of water. Y, Y
4. 3,500 calorie deficit for the week. -523, -699 (total -1,222)
5. Take measurements. N, N
6. Log every day, especially weekends. Y, Y
7. No chips, no cookies. Y, Stayed away from cookies, but got into the chips - twice.

Non-fitness Goals:

8. Finish planting garden. 1/3 done, getting close to 1/2 done
9. Get DD's birthday party organized. N, N
10. Housework, 30 minutes daily + 1 load of laundry. 15 + 1 load, N
11. Confirm camp reservations. Y
12. Have kids complete at least one 4-H project. They helped in the garden. More gardening.

We spent most of yesterday gardening. In the morning I took the kids out to the Children's Garden out at the fair grounds. They each selected a spot to work on and we pulled a bunch of the weeds and made some plans for what should go where. The funny part is that my DD's have been helping me in the garden since they could walk, but they both look a little younger than they are. So here was this leader trying to give them pointers and help them and my girls where like, "okay that's blue fescue we can divide that and the lambs ear might look better moved over here, let's leave the foxglove because it's blooming now and won't transplant well". After a few minutes she went back to her own spot and left my girls to go hog wild on their spots. My oldest is doing an "Indian Summer Garden", she's planning a bean pole teepee for the center of it, with some Indian corn, a fire pit filled with blazing marigolds and an Indian scarecrow. Our middle DD is planning something like a "Sunflower Tea Room" sized for her American girl doll. Sunflowers won't be in bloom during the fair, so she's thinking cone flowers or black eyed Susan's.

We stayed at the Children's Garden for an hour or so and then headed off to the vegetable garden. I had planned to get quite a bit done, but when we got there I had to spent about an hour just watering the plants we put in yesterday. About 1/2 of them looked downright melted, but I think I managed to save the lot. Yesterday the temp and humidity were both in the upper 90's. It's enough to make your flip flops feel squishy. I did manage to plant some sweet corn, a bunch of herbs and some beets. Today if the weather holds I'm going to finish the corn and hopefully the pumpkins and melons. We'll see, it feels like rain so maybe not.

Mike, my DH suffers from a bulged disc too. Stretching seems to help him a lot, he also has had to learn when to quit, overdoing it always sets him back. A friend of mine has the same problem and swears by her inversion table workout. I've tried to talk DH into getting one, but so far he's been a tightwad on the issue, but maybe you're less stubborn? My neck hurts often enough that I would like to try it for myself.

mhibdon, I don't live anywhere near the ocean, but we have some mighty big lakes here in Michigan. I've seen people with surf boards at the beaches, but never thought of trying it. Until recently I was a morbidly obese middle aged woman. And how often do you see that on a surf board? I'll have to think about it, there is the "crisis" to blame after all. I've been doing some yoga (for balance, cause I have NONE), and might try snowboarding this winter, so we'll see. Good food for thought anyway.

Cassie, great job on getting the boy to think about these things. I'm working on our oldest, she's going through a growth spurt and has become hollow with a sweet tooth all of a sudden. I remember being like that as a kid too, only it didn't really stop once I quit getting taller. OY!

Quinn, I wish I had days where I wasn't hungry. When it' too hot I don't have a huge appetite, but I crave chips and ice cream (and BBQ anything). Yesterday after sweating all day in the garden I mistakenly opened a bag of chips, and was over budget before I realized that I was eating. Last night it was all I could do to stay out of the freezer filled with ice cream (the box on the top is chocolate brownie sundae 150 calories per 1/2 cup serving - food porn, sorry). I'm jealous as all get out of your non-appetite. Could you pack some of that up and send me a bottle?

xcurlygirlx, I'm sorry the cake and ice cream are causing you to second guess this journey. I was the same way when I started. I felt like I had to stay completely away from those things in order to lose weight, and make no mistake I do have to keep it to a minimum in order to lose. However if it's something you know about in advance you can make a plan for an alternative like Cassie suggested. I happen to like frozen pudding cups as a substitute for ice cream, or a dish of Greek yogurt with some frozen blueberries tossed in. Frozen yogurt is also good enough that I serve it instead of ice cream and the family doesn't even notice. Well, they might notice but they eat it without complaining. So you can participate via substitution or by making it a little healthier for everyone, or both. I also prescribe to the school of "no frosting", you can scrape it off and save yourself 1/2 the calories.

Well, all the kids are suddenly up and now it's time to head out to the Children's Garden for breakfast and weeding.

I only have a moment for a quick check in (interview at 10:30, I'll check in properly after)

But I did weigh this morning. 179.4!!! Finally below 180. A good psychological boost to ward off the nerves

Wowgirl, you're off to a good start. Hope you get used to the food soon. If you feel full, can you refrigerate the rest to eat for a healthful snack later?

MAIN80, congrats on your calories yesterday. In this heat I'm drinking water like crazy. Supposed to be 95 here in Ohio today with a heat index of over 100.

Cassie, you had a GREAT day yesterday--even SLEEP! Oh, my, I can't even begin to think of tennis in this heat! Thanks for your encouragement. I reached 10% sat fat for the second time yesterday using more nuts, olive oil, avocado, and by having a vegetarian day. Thanks again for your help on that! Grandkids and I are off to a good start--good behavior; little ones quite willing to read to me each day (so far) and play some educational games on the computer, plus having fun playing and stuff.

Mike, sorry to hear about your MRI results. I hope the chiropractic and toned down exercise will help you through this.

Quinn, wow, three bulging discs! So glad you found a way to manage it. Golly, how'd you manage to walk 2 miles in this heat? I just walked to my DVD in my air conditioned living room. I was so glad grandson's softball game was at 6:30PM last night--by that time the heat was bearable.

Almeeker, congrats on those calorie deficits! So cool that your young daughters are so educated by you on gardening. I'll bet they do great at the fair. When is it?

Good Morning, Everyone!

Was a little disappointed with the scale today. After barely eating yesterday, I showed an increase of one pound. I kind of remember similar things happening in Mexico with my body trying to adjust to sudden heat. (Water retention or something maybe?) Anyone in hot weather climates know anything about this? I was sure to drink a lot of fluids. Not sure. Another mid-90's day on tap for today, as well.

mhibdon,
I've said on this thread before that Charleston is one of my favorite cities in the US. I loved the architecture, the ocean, the people and OMG... don't get me started on the food! You're so lucky to live in such a great location.

almeeker,
Children's gardens are awesome. When my kids were little, we did an awful lot of low cost, outdoorsy activities. Today, I think kids are raised to believe that if an activity doesn't cost a lot of money, it's no fun. (Can you say "club sports"?) My kid's loved working in the garden for hours. You're teaching them a skill that they will take with them forever. Give yourself a pat on the back for raising kids that aren't dependent on t.v. and video games.

...and inversion tables!!! LOVE THEM!!! I like to go on a smaller angle, not totally upside down. lol My Chiro is a family friend, so he has invited us to use his at his office as we like. I'll never forget the first time he showed it to me. He's super athletic and leaped up onto the machine, like a bat, totally upside down within seconds. I though he was crazy. But it is a super easy and safe way to get the compression to ease up from a nerve. Maybe we can all chip in and buy one...lol. We'll use it like a time-share. One of us can use it for a month, then UPS it to the next person for a month. LOL

...and no. I can't eat when it's hot which is actually bad because then, when it cools off late at night, I want to eat which I don't like to do. I've been like this since I was a kid. I have no idea why.

Terri,
170's!!! Woohoo!!! What an incredible day you're having! I'm pretty jealous! Knock 'em dead at your interview! You'll be fantastic! Can't wait to hear all about it.

Mern,
In the summer, especially when it's hot, I walk at 9 or 10 at night. (That's where my dog issues come in. lol) I actually had a slight run-in with one last night. I grabbed my husband's hand so hard that he said that he had no feeling in two of his fingers for about an hour! Guess I better make another visit to my local animal shelter.

mhibdon, I hope to get to that level of confidence one day Your right, it is a work in progress, and it's nice to know you've been there and look at you now!

Mern & almeeker & Main80 & cjohnson,
Thanks for the suggestions, I will try them! Most days, I would've considered a substitute for the goodies, but it was getting late, and I already ate my calories for that day. Calorie counting is new to me..I lost my pevious weight mostly through exercise. I've stayed around the same weight for the last year and that's why I'm working on my "diet". I talked with my husband and he vows to be more supportive Cheat day will be saturdays where we can all look forward to a little treat.

Terri, congrats on hitting another milestone!!!!!!!! and good luck at your interview
