Thanks for the warm welcome, everybody! Sorry for not showing up on the weigh-in topic the other day; my scale is kinda broken at the moment, so there's not much I can do there. Plus I just started my official diet on Sunday, so I don't expect there to be any results yet. But I've been staying on track so far and have actually found some enjoyment in the time I spend on the treadmill! Who woulda thought?
Mmm, ice cream. Haha. Sounds like fun, Quinn! |

Hi I just joined Fitday.com 1 week ago and started training hard again. I kinda got lazy and ate whatever I wanted, plus I got a nasty virus that made me very sick for 2 weeks
but anyways! Here's my deal:26 y/o female 5'1.5" starting weight 112lbs current weight 108.5lbs goal weight 105-107lbs LEAN & MUSCULAR! I've been going to the gym religiously all week, I've gone 5 days out of 7. Tomorrow I'm taking a break, no gym or strenuous exercise... just rest! I've been on an all protein and fruit diet all week. I've only been eating fish and fruit. Here and there I will have a banana that counts as carbs, but at least its a healthy one instead of chips & cookies! I went from 112 to 109 overnight. It was strange, I dunno if it was the virus leaving my body but 1 week ago I kept getting up every hour to pee & everytime I did it was A LOT! It was strange because I wasn't constantly drinking water, so where did all this water come from; of course my body lol. I weighed myself before I went to bed (112), I woke up and weighed 109lbs... unbelievable! I recommend cutting most to all carbs out of your diet. Yes, carbs give you energy for the next day but they also store FAT which you don't want! It's working for me and should work for you. I'm also sticking to broccoli, cauliflower, corn, citrus fruits like oranges, bananas and watermelon... Don't let yourself be lazy. You may be at the gym starting to do crunches and think "UGH! I don't wanna do this... or this is too hard" its not, you can do it. My quote I stick with, "Falling isn't failing, not getting back up is." Push yourself and you will see positive change. OMG I sound like Jillian Michaels or something LOL... sorry. Well, I see and feel my 6pack coming back, YAY! I haven't seen it since 2008; which was my best year physically. GL everyone and feel free to message me

Hi I am new to fitday and need some advise on the last 10lbs I am trying to lose, Im 5ft 126 lbs. and have been running and watching what I eat very closely but not losing weight my diet consist of fruits, veggies, chicken and seafood. I've been told running doesnt burn that many calories and that I need to lift weights any suggestions???? Ive also been told about the starvation mode your body goes into if you dont eat every few hours so even if I exercise and eat perfect will I still not lose weight if my body is trying to hold on to my fat cells????

Hi mspe,
When I got to ten pounds to go I hit a plateau for about 3 weeks. Sometimes you have to wait it out. As far as exercise (and anything else, for that matter), you don't have to do anything just because someone says it is good to do. Strength training is great, but a number of folks here have been very successful without introducing weight work. However, it may be that your body is used to the running routine and you may want to switch that up a little. Running is generally a pretty good calorie burn (I have a heart rate monitor that counts calories and I can back that up), but if your body is used to something, it will be more efficient at it and not burn as much as it used to. You might want to try, for instance, if you run at a steady pace now, doing intervals, or do a different type of exercise altogether for a few weeks. That might be an efficient way of kick starting your metabolism again.

Cassie - You really haven't had real ice cream for 15 years?? That is impressive! I've tried eating yogurt when I want ice cream, but frozen yogurt is a good idea, it would probably feel more like my lifelong comfort food
thanks for the advice!Mspe - I agree, intervals are probably best in the way of work-outs because your body doesn't get used to it as easily as a consistent pace or difficulty. I use a different workout every day so that I can feel well rounded (I just started this last week, but I have lost weight quickly this way in the past). Also, if my college health class knowledge (lol) is still correct, you can't actually get rid of fat cells, you can only make them smaller. And you are right, if you are not getting enough calories or if you are working out TOO hard, your body can actually store more fat and create more fat cells than normal because of starvation instincts. Make sure you aren't leaving yourself hungry or even full, just eat often enough to feel satisfied so your body has the food it needs and not too much. Oh and drink ALOT of water! Anyone can correct me on this, I'm just going off of memory. I just looked up some articles to check and here is a really good one on how fat is burned: What Happens to Fat Cells when Fat is Burned And this one touches on starvation, but focuses on weight loss: How to Lose Weight and Keep it off stonegyrl - welcome to fitday, congrats on loosing weight so quickly and being motivated! Good luck getting to your goal. Last edited by Twinnermommy; 05-21-2010 at 02:26 AM. |

Good morning everyone. Happy Friday!!
![]() I have been actively working on not so much dieting but changing my lifestyle. I am trying to eat more veggies; loaded up on those at the store last night. I am also trying to add strength training to my workouts. I walk on my treadmill in the morning and then do lunges and crunches after work. I am trying to complete a lower body workout from an exercise video by adding a little to it each week. So, I feel like I am making good changes but I actually gained a pound since Tuesday. I think it's due to the strength training. I am willing to accept a weight gain so long as it means more muscle and less fat but right now it has me a little freaked out. Has anyone else experienced a gain after introducing strength training? How do you know if it's from muscle building? I had the BF% option on a scale I bought but it no longer works.

Happy Friday back to you! According to the research I've done, it can take 4-6 weeks to build a pound of muscle in females, and that is with dedicated training. I think I heard somewhere also that your muscles hold fluid after exertion, but I can't remember exactly what the deal is there. Once Beth replaces her laptop, she could weigh in with an expert trainer's point of view, though; my info is strictly from my own poking around on the internet and in books!!
That being said, if you haven't consumed 3500 extra calories since the last time you weighed in, there's no way your weight gain can be taken at face value. It could be due to water, sodium, where your food is in the digestive process...anything, really. I know I went through the same panic when my scale number bumped up. I got to the point where I knew I was doing everything right but the scale was still flukey, so I gave it to my husband for two weeks and he kept it at work. I know it's hard, but if you focus on what you're doing right and not the number, you will get the results you want. You might also want to try measuring instead of weighing for a while. Hope everyone is having a good Friday . Last day of school for us here...which is a good thing and a not so good thing!

Hi everyone-- Cassie-- what's good and not good about school being out? Just curious...I taught middle school for 30 years and I liked it a lot when school was out so I could be with my kids and get some down time!
Ok so it's Friday and I am going to really try to "be good" until the weigh in....I am still not moving (down) but I want to stay the same! So this is my chance and I am challenging myself to get through the weekend without having to reward myself with food. Welcome to all the new members of this site....it is pretty great, because everyone is caring and positive and helpful here. It is an unusual group and I am lucky to have you all! Have a super weekend! Sharon
