Just read your post about Scott. He seems like an awesome dude. I feel his pain with the back issue as I'm going through the same thing. I'm slowly getting back into doing squats and deadlifts but the weight is about 1/2 of what it was before my injury. I just had my 3rd epidural and for the most part I feel decent but I can still tell there is something wrong. Not being able to do what I love to do, how I want to do it is a to pill to swallow.
Scott is a great guy, and like you he continues to have challenges with his back. It looks like you are doing the right thing by taking it easy and slowly getting back into your heavy training. Take your time and listen to your body. I bet it is a hard pill to swallow not being able to train like you used to, but keep training my friend and keep the faith.
