What do you do for a living?

I got my Ph.D. in Neuroscience in May 2010 -- I'm currently a postdoctoral associate at a university in Florida. My major research goals are the study of how hormones affect the brain and neurotransmitter systems.
The current lab I'm working at uses sex behavior as a model, so I get to watch rats have sex a lot (lots of fun!) -- I'm not interested in sex persay, but I'm using the behavior since it's well-characterized, and it's easy to see if things go wrong after experimental manipulations
Uh... so in short, I study brains? And how hormones change them, affect brain signaling, and facilitate or disrupt processing I also recently consulted on my first book (yay!) which -- while it may be a little fluffy and aimed for the masses, was a real challenge, because sometimes I still have difficulty translating my research into non-technical terms.

That sounds very cool! Many congrats on the PhD. It sounds like you are off to a great career. And we can definitely use your insights on these very peculiar organs in our heads. There are a couple more PhDs kicking around the site. But when it comes to weight control, we are all starting back in the 1st grade .

I'm relatively new to FitDay. I'm a Technical Support Specialist II, which is a fancy way of saying I do computer tech support in a large school district. 58,000 students and 10,000 employees. We have about 83 staff but not all of them are worker bees, if you get my meaning. I'm part of the Help Desk, the phone triage area. It's a high stress job but one I'll only be doing for 8 more months. I'm retiring this fall to have more time to do fun stuff.

rpmcduff, I'd be interested to hear what you ran into with Lawson. We are just starting the process and it's proving to be a daunting task. We have a large section of blue collar personnel who have never even touched a computer so we're starting the training back in the stone age. This is a mouse, this is a computer, these are keys.

And tell me about it, we're all on the same page there! I might study brains but I still need help using mine all the time

Hi, Mike. I'm a retired former sales rep/mgr for a safety mfr diagnosed last year w/type 2 diabetes and COPD. Serves me right for too many years of Lucky Strikes and Pall Malls and letting me get to 348 slim trim lbs. Down to 255, looking for 225, and finding this site helpful (usually) in keeping me focused on my foods.

I can imagine how tough your job must be. What % of your patients would you say are under 45ish? Do you see much change in the age "trends"?

I'm an archaeologist, though its nothing like you'd guess from watching Indiana Jones! I do a lot of consulting work with developers who are trying to comply with complex federal regulations. Sounds fun, I know! I go out in the field ahead of wind farms, pipelines, road improvements, fiber optic cable installations, etc and make sure that they aren't going to disturb any archaeological sites, especially burials. I spend a lot of time with construction crews who are working in areas with a high potential for archaeological sites. I also work with tribes to make sure their interests are represented. Occasionally I get to work on really cool sites or in exotic locales, but the daily grind is a lot more mundane. I stay in hotels most nights April through December. In the summer I dig a lot of holes and in the winter I type a lot of reports -- Its not for everybody, but I love it!
