Default I have a rather lengthy question about calorie calculation

Well, my husband insists I eat the dinner he makes tonight, which is beef stroganoff (I'm entirely skipping the noodles), I normally make my own food due to dieting but he insists.

Well, since he's making it from scratch-ish (he's using condensed soups) there really isn't a way to figure out how many calories would be in whatever portion I choose, so this is what I did:

I added the total number of oz of the ingredients and added up the calories of aforementioned ingredients.

Ground beef (85/15): 1080 cal/20 oz
Sour cream: 480 cal/8 oz
1 can condensed mushroom soup: 250 cal/10.75 oz
1 can condensed cream of chicken soup: 300 cal/10.75 oz

Giving a grand total of 2110 cal/ 49.5 oz.

I then divided the calories by the number of oz and got: 42.62 calories per ounce, this will make it easier for me to choose a portion size.

Does this sound right to you guys? Or did I go about this entirely wrong?

Yup, that's exactly what I do for a custom recipe. It's a little easier with FitDay PC as it has a recipe calculator built in where you drag the ingredients in and it gives you a grand total but you still have to divide for calories/nutirients in a given portion.

Regards,
Michael

I use this site....link removed

just write out the entire recipe (one line per item) and put in the number of servings you will divide it in to....it calculates it all for you.

I usually do it a little differently. I usually make dinner for myself, my husband and my two kids. We divide it into five (four of us and lunch for my husband for the next day).

I put each ingredient into fitday independantly and then divide the quantity by five. A simple egg scramble starts as:

8 eggs
2 cups hashbrowns
1 green pepper
1 onion
1 cup 2% milk

Becomes:

1.6 eggs
0.4 cups hash browns
0.2 green pepper
0.2 onion
0.2 cups 2% milk

If it is something I will be having frequently, I will put all these values into a new day in fitday and then use the total values to create a custom food. (I then remove them from that day, of course.)

The recipe calorie calculator over at sparkpeople should be a lot of help. I use them every now and then to figure out how many calories are in a serving of some of my home-made stuff.
