Default Peanuts and ounces - Fluid or dry?

When you measure out two ounces of peanuts, are they fluid ounces (measuring cup) or dry weight (scale)?

And what's the rule of thumb? How do I know which measuring method to use?

I'm dangerous with peanuts so I count 'em into a bowl and shell as I eat (11 cals per double nut). Taking time to shell them works great to slow you down a bit as you eat them.

For nuts I usually go by grams, unless I'm eating pistachios with the shells still on, then I use a 1/2 cup measure and make sure none of them are sticking above the rim. Although usually with pistachios, once I open the bag, the kids have eaten most of it before I get past the first small handful.
