7-Day Motivational Thread Starting June 10 -"Little by little does the trick."-Aesop

Good morning, everyone. I was away all day yesterday, so will have to go back and catch up on yesterday's posts.

Pretty much the same goals for me:

1. Avg 1400 calories or less for the week
2. Avoid sugar and refined flour foods
3. Avg 45 min extra movement a day

01gt4.6 06-10-2013 07:03 AM

Good afternoon. I'm in, Tori will be making my goals. Where is everyone?

ToriD1012 06-10-2013 09:12 AM

Wonder Twin Powers Activate!!!

Gotta get this done quick before my internet service goes out again. It's been spotty for days....must be all the crappy weather we've been having.

Tori's Goals
1: Post daily, Monday-Friday (BF is only off Saturday and Sunday, and seeing as how we work opposite shifts during the week, the only time we really see each other is the weekends. I try to stay off the computer as much as possible during that time)
2: Spend 4+ hours with the Jassimonster
3: 6 miles
4: 64 oz water daily
5: Lose 1 pound. Seems modest, but it's better than gaining.
6: Send out mass pm to all the regulars that aren't here.

Mike's Goals
1: Fewer than 50 net carbs daily
2: 128 oz water daily
3: Gym 3 times
4: Take all vitamins & supplements daily
5: Three RAKs

A quick update on me for those that don't know me. I was a regular here for a long while, and had success. Then my BF was stationed overseas and my life went to hell. I was depressed, lonely, and just didn't care to do much other than wallow in the fact that he was gone. There were days that I quite literally spent the entire day crying. I'd wake up crying, and go to bed crying. I had never been so affected by a man. I like to joke that he broke me. Before I met him, I was happy go lucky without a care in the world. Guys came and went, I was happy being me, with or without a man in my life. Then I met him and it all changed. I was the love struck girl that I hated. I tried half heartedly to jump back on the wagon, but until your whole heart and mind is in it, it's just not worth doing. So, I ate as I pleased and I gained weight. A pound here, a pound there. Then he came home this past October. YAY!! Home for good!! He wanted all the foods he hadn't been getting. Mashed potatoes, meatloaf, shepherd's pie, home made cakes, etc etc. Then more pounds started creeping back on. I am currently 30 or so pounds heavier than my lowest weight since joining FitDay. It's my fault. Well, no, actually it's BF's fault for breaking me and making me depressed (we all know that I couldn't blame myself, right Mike). So, here I am again with renewed determination. So, yeah, that's about it. Oh....and for those who don't know...The Jassimonster, The Jassi Cat, or any variation is my baby/kitty, Jasmine, who has to live with my parents for the time being. The landlord at BF and my place doesn't allow inside pets. We did however inherit two outside doggies from BF's niece. When she moved back to her dad's, she left the dogs. Sadly, one of them was flattened by a car....poor Bubba....the other is going to meet the same fate if he's not careful. The one we have left is named Boss. Or The Boss Man, "That stupid dog", and anything else that comes out when I'm talking about him. That's about it I guess.....Oh, and when I get started, I'm pretty long winded :p

RenewedSoul 06-10-2013 09:58 AM

Looks like everyone has tried hard this last week and faced challenges. I lost five pounds last week, and I am hoping for more loss this week. I listed below this week's goals. Good luck everyone! :)

Week's goals:

*Drink 6 cups of water
*Walk 7 days a week/15 min. a day min.
*Post everything I eat and log in everyday
*Lose 1 pound or more this week
*Eat less that 1,250 calories a day

dmartz 06-10-2013 11:12 AM

Goals

  • Calories Avg. < 1400 /day:
  • Cholesterol < 200mg:
  • Vegetables > 3 / day:
  • Protein > 50 g / day:
  • Sugar < 50 g / day:
  • Workout > 150 min/wk:
Did not lose one pound last week, but I'm going to try to stick to my usual.
I already know that 2 out of 6 will be a stretch for me this week, but there it is.

- Donna

iansteele 06-10-2013 11:34 AM

Goals for this week:

1. Eat at least 5 meals per day M-6
2. No more than 500 calories per meal M-45/316/380/96/296/811 (bleh)
3. Under 2k calories/day M-1944
4. More than 2.5k calories out/day M-2987 (very inaccurate I think but that's what Fitday reckons)
5. More than 750 calorie difference M-1042
6. Learn 3 Korean things everyday M-조각 engraving/영원 eternity/원한다면 if you want

episode2011 06-10-2013 11:45 AM

Given that A) last week was pretty much a bust and B) this upcoming weekend is Father's Day in the US (is that so in other parts of the world?), there is the potential that this week will also go belly-up. And given this particular belly, that won't be a pretty sight.

Therefore, I'm going to keep the goals boring and same. Not ready to concentrate on shaking things up just yet.

Goals for the Week:
  • Log everything, no exceptions (nibbles and "tastes" count!):
  • Maintain adequate daily hydration:
  • Maintain a 7-day rolling average between 1200-1550 calories:
  • Maintain a 7-day rolling average between 800-1300mg sodium:
  • Maintain a 7-day rolling average of at least 16g fiber:
  • Some sort of physical activity 4x during the week: ...(0/4)
  • Study every day:

Robingen 06-10-2013 11:59 AM

Hi Tori......good luck getting in touch with the "regulars"-quite a few of them missing. I like the goals you gave Mike, he should be able to do that!

Renewedsoul congratulations on your loss, that is so excellent. I hope this is sustainable for you. As it's so restricted.

Carolyn, thanks for getting the thread started, whew, west coast right? And no thread starters early this am?

Ian your goals seem very reasonable now, not that any of us will know if that's really Korean or not. I can count to ten in Korean but who knows about the Kanji.

Donna :( no loss. But it must be helping that you are logging. That whole "if I eat this I have to log it" thing.

Epixi, I think you can do that!

My goals:

1) Rolling average <1400 cals: M-1169
2) One green tea/day: M-Y
3) Increase Omega 3: M-Y
4) Do some exercise: M- walked 2.5k

It's very interesting now that I have lost >20 pounds, to see who does and does not make a comment/complement. Funny how some people are.

01gt4.6 06-10-2013 12:11 PM

Today has been a bust for me but I'll kill my goals starting tomorrow. Tonight I have pool league and I'm bringing a friend on my team a huge container of jambalaya that's left over from our benefit concert that we had for Johnny yesterday. I guess I can count that as a RAK?

iansteele 06-10-2013 02:27 PM

You caught me Robin :) I am just copy/pasting random words off Asian websites.

I think my girlfriend might be pregnant, how many calories can I report it as if I suffer a heart attack?

libby116 06-10-2013 02:43 PM

Hi all. I only lost .4 of a pound last week but I have high hopes for this week. I want to get out of the 180's and into the 170's by next Monday.
Calories under 1100
Exercise over 5k
Have a great week.

episode2011 06-11-2013 01:17 AM

Thanks for getting us up and running, Carolynn!

I think some people might be a bit skittish nowadays to make comments unless they have specific knowledge that you're trying. What if the weight-loser has lost weight because they have some serious disease? What if they have depression? What if the weight-loser infers that, "if she says I look good now, does that mean I looked hideous before"? And then, some people are just insensitive, too absorbed in themselves to notice anyone else or are simply unobservant.

In any event, looks like you're off to a good start for the week, Robin! I hope we'll all have a good start (and good end) this week!

Mike, what's RAK?

Goals for the Week:

Log everything, no exceptions (nibbles and "tastes" count!): yes
Maintain adequate daily hydration: yes
Maintain a 7-day rolling average between 1200-1550 calories: 1546
Maintain a 7-day rolling average between 800-1300mg sodium: 1097
Maintain a 7-day rolling average of at least 16g fiber: 19
Some sort of physical activity 4x during the week: Mon=Tai Chi and Navrai ...(1/4)
Study every day: yes

So far, I've gotten through part 2 of Navrai -- will probably start part 3 on Wednesday/Thursday. I'm only at part 6 of Tai Chi 24-form. Still a long way to go. Taiko and Yoga are both going well, I think. I'm enjoying them and I think I'm getting better at both.

01gt4.6 06-11-2013 02:26 AM

Mike's Goals
1: Fewer than 50 net carbs daily no
2: 128 oz water daily no
3: Gym 3 times no
4: Take all vitamins & supplements daily no
5: Three RAKs yes

carolynnq 06-11-2013 04:06 AM

I posted and ran yesterday. Busy work day. Then in the afternoon, my husband's email got hacked. I'm the IT person around our house, so I was dealing with that. I didn't cook dinner and with the stress of dealing with his computer, I ate a packaged Danish. Calorie wise I was okay, but I still felt bad for not resisting and choosing something better. Eating an apple and some cheese would have been just as easy. I've thought about buying some yellow "crime scene" tape and draping it across my fridge and food cupboards!

Libby, a half pound in a week may not be what you were aiming for, but it IS progress.

Mike, that's great that you let Tori set your goals for the week. Now, get to it today!

Robin, no one's mentioned my weight loss, but being tall-ish, I hide the weight fairly well. I've worn the same clothes for the last 10 years, from 145 to 173. They were, however, getting very snug.

Tori - I enjoyed reading about your story - and finding out who the mysterious JC is!

RenewedSoul - good going on the weight loss. I was watching a show where the participants ate fruits and vegetables for 2 weeks. The idea was to eat as our gatherer ancestors ate. These people lived in an outdoor zoo enclosure during that time! It was cute seeing them show the children what they were eating. (And there was a pretty funny montage of the participants running quickly to the bathroom.) They ate fish once. At the end of the two weeks, they all had big drops in cholesterol levels, salt levels, insulin, etc.

Donna
- I didn't lose any last week either. Is the weight you're stuck at a weight you were at for a long time prior to your weight gain?

Originally Posted by iansteele (Post 99686)

I hope that's good news - I'm excited for you. (And if you have a heart attack, at least you'll probably lose some during recovery and after the doctors will put you on a diet.)

All good observations. No one has commented on my weight loss despite losing 25 lbs. Well, a couple of weeks ago, my husband suggested I might lose some weight. I was  until I realized he was coming at it from a health perspective - he had just read how losing weight reduces the chances for diabetes. On the other hand, no one commented on my weight gain either!

And, epixi, despite your weight loss slow down, look at you with your navrai, yoga, tai chi, and taiko. If you hadn't started your weight loss journey, you probably wouldn't have done some of those. Even though I'm not losing right now, I'm still seeing some changes (like my arms getting firmer).

-------
1. Avg 1400 calories or less for the week - 1329
2. Avoid sugar and refined flour foods N
3. Avg 45 min extra movement a day 40

Robingen 06-11-2013 12:56 PM

My goals:

1) Rolling average <1400 cals: M-1169, T-1193
2) One green tea/day: M-Y, T-Y
3) Increase Omega 3: M-Y, T-Y
4) Do some exercise: M- walked 2.5k, T- swam

Maybe they can put heart attacks (although probably more aptly called a nerve attack) in the activity log lol.

Oh and the comment about who comments on the weight loss and who doesn't I guess I was sarcastically commenting on a couple of specific people who definitely have noticed and are too _____ to say anything (i.e., they see what you are eating and all the effort you are making) while others are being complementary.

No time for a long post today. Just got home about 30 minutes ago. LONNNGGG DAY! Catch y'all tomorrow.

dmartz 06-11-2013 02:32 PM

Tues

  • Calories Avg. < 1400 /day: 957, 1060
  • Cholesterol < 200mg: 75, 23
  • Vegetables > 3 / day: 1, 1
  • Protein > 50 g / day: 52, 53
  • Sugar < 50 g / day: 28, 42
  • Workout > 150 min/wk: 60, 5
Robin: Yes, I definitely need to do more cardio, but I'm suffering from inertia.
Actually, I wouldn't mind one bit if I can stay at this weight.

libby116 06-11-2013 03:10 PM

The pizza monster got me. I was too tired to make a decent meal so I put two pizzas in the oven. The three guys had half a pizza each thats 1080 cal.
and I had one slice at 540 cal. My count for the day was still under 1000 and I walked 2k for 29min. All in all a good day. Week 3 is going well.

iansteele 06-11-2013 05:28 PM

Mike - I thought RAK meant Randomly Acting Korean, like taking off your shoes and sharing the odour when you walk into someones house :)

Carolynn and Robin - Funnily enough nowhere on the internet seems to have an amount of calories burnt during a heart/nerve attack :( Might need to do the research myself.

Epixi - Do you do your Yoga/Tai Chi/Navrai at home? If so, what videos do you use?

Libby - 540 calories doesn't seem so bad for pizza.

Goals for this week:

1. Eat at least 5 meals per day M-6, T-4
2. No more than 500 calories per meal M-45/316/380/96/296/811 (bleh), T-198/193/302/339
3. Under 2k calories/day M-1944, T-1030
4. More than 2.5k calories out/day M-2987 (very inaccurate I think but that's what Fitday reckons), T-2211 (still think this is inaccurate)
5. More than 750 calorie difference M-1042, T-1181
6. Learn 3 Korean things everyday M-조각 engraving/영원 eternity/원한다면 if you want, T-음신 pregnancy

Tuesday stats look a little bad since I spent 4 hours in the hospital waiting room not suffering a heart attack and didn't think about taking a walk or learning new words to pass the time - idiot!

libby116 06-11-2013 11:30 PM

Good Wednesday morning. The scale is inching down a bit day by day.
I even saw 179 on the scale for a fraction of a second before it adjusted itself. I can close my eyes and picture myself looking slim and trim next summer, swimming at the beach, riding a bike, running a 5k race and loving life. Now I am doing the work to get there. What are your dreams?

episode2011 06-12-2013 02:11 AM

Sounds like week 3 is going well, indeed, Libby! I like reading your dreams. As for me, I visualize of seeing prominent collarbones and hipbones, wearing anything sleeveless, shopping for single-digit clothes and of being able to comfortably cross my legs *under* a table.

Carolynn, I love your comment about the "crime scene" tape! That gave me a chuckle. You are so right about physical changes. You say you can notice it in your arms (yay!). Me, I'm noticing it in my waist. I recently pulled out some jeans from the way-back machine (when I was even higher than when I started this latest weight-loss adventure). I can pull them on without unbuttoning/unzipping . Jeans that I usually wear nowadays cannot be worn without a belt. Well, not without risking a wardrobe malfunction :p.

Is your back feeling better, Robin? Is the swimming helping?

Great job on getting back to it, Mike!

Tori, that's very compassionate of you to reach out to the missing. Thank you.

Ian, you were serious about the heart attack??? You poor thing! Thank goodness it wasn't the real thing! Still, did they give you any indication of what was causing your discomfort? Did you mention your weight-loss regimen? Could that be, in any way, connected and did the docs give you any guidance?

As far as what I'm using for activities, I'm taking studio classes for Yoga and Taiko. I am learning Navrai on my own, using a series of videos on YouTube (How to Bollywood Dance: Navrai Majhi by Doonya). The instructor has broken the dance into a series of 4 videos and, although she goes a little faster than I originally thought, it's very easy to follow. She explains and demonstrates well. I also downloaded the song itself (it's a catchy tune!) so I *could*, in theory, practice even when I'm not online. Haven't so far but that's the plan. Maybe one day, out in the park!

For Tai Chi I have two DVDs by Dr. Paul Lam (Tai Chi for Beginners and Tai Chi: The 24 Forms). Of all the Tai Chi DVDs I have or have viewed, I like Dr. Lam's the best. He breaks the moves into individual steps and explains them very well and in great depth. It's like having a private tutor. Most importantly, for me, he performs the segments with his back to the camera (the other people are performing facing the camera), so you can easily follow along.

Goals for the Week:
  • Log everything, no exceptions (nibbles and "tastes" count!): yes, yes
  • Maintain adequate daily hydration: yes, yes
  • Maintain a 7-day rolling average between 1200-1550 calories: 1546, 1469
  • Maintain a 7-day rolling average between 800-1300mg sodium: 1097, 906
  • Maintain a 7-day rolling average of at least 16g fiber: 19, 20
  • Some sort of physical activity 4x during the week: Mon=Tai Chi and Navrai, Tue=Taiko ...(2/4)
  • Study every day: yes, yes

RenewedSoul 06-12-2013 02:56 AM

Week's goals:

*Drink 6 cups of water: no, yes
*Walk 7 days a week/15 min. a day min.: yes, yes
*Post everything I eat and log in everyday: yes, yes
*Lose 1 pound or more this week: crossing fingers
*Eat less that 1,250 calories a day: yes, yes

Libby: That is great! Don't you hate when the scale "adjusts up," seems like it never adjusts down. :p If you saw 179 for a second, it will hold still there very soon!

Ian: Sorry to hear about the ER visit. I hope everything turned out okay.

Carolyn: Sorry to hear about your husband's email being hacked. It's hard for me to resist temptations in stressful and busy situations. Also, lol @ yellow "crime scene tape."

Episode: Tai Chi has always interested me. I know a man that has been into Tai Chi for years. I am sure it helps relieve stress.

Um, the heart attack was a joke, it was my response to my girlfriend perhaps being pregnant. The time at the hospital was waiting for her to have things checked out since the doctor ruled out pregnancy after only asking 1 question. She has all the signs (dizziness, headaches, back pain, sleeping alot, too many trips to the bathroom) so this doctor hasn't convinced me of anything other than reaffirmed my beliefs that the healthcare system in this country is less than adequate.

Thanks for the info about Dr. Lam's Tai Chi, think I should check it out and give it a go when I stop being so lazy one day.

Goals for this week:

1. Eat at least 5 meals per day M-6, T-4, W-4
2. No more than 500 calories per meal M-45/316/380/96/296/811 (bleh), T-198/193/302/339, W-57/280/210/447
3. Under 2k calories/day M-1944, T-1030, W-993
4. More than 2.5k calories out/day M-2987 (very inaccurate I think but that's what Fitday reckons), T-2211 (still think this is inaccurate), W-2343
5. More than 750 calorie difference M-1042, T-1181, W-1349
6. Learn 3 Korean things everyday M-조각 engraving/영원 eternity/원한다면 if you want, T-음신 pregnancy, W-nothing

episode2011 06-12-2013 10:40 AM

If you want to check out Dr. Lam's videos without springing for the actual thing, parts of the first lesson of both DVDs is on Youtube. The Youtube version skips a bit of the material (and spends some time pitching you on getting the real DVDs) but you can get a good feel for how he presents the material and can better determine whether his teaching style is a good match for your learning style.

Robingen 06-12-2013 11:45 AM

My goals:

1) Rolling average <1400 cals: M-1169, T-1193, 1207
2) One green tea/day: M-Y, T-Y, W-Y
3) Increase Omega 3: M-Y, T-Y, W-Y
4) Do some exercise: M- walked 2.5k, T- swam, W-Nothing

Epixi, glad to see you are really back in the game. Thought we might lost you there last week, YEAH that you are back on track. My back is MUCH better thanks, the chiropractor worked wonders with it, really quickly. I was so impressed that I am still going, for some chronic but more mild issues.

Ian, sorry but that just sounds scary about the health care system. Hope it goes better.

Donna, do you mean you just don't want to gain (upcoming vacation)? That was kinda mysterious:).

ToriD1012 06-12-2013 02:08 PM

RenewedSoul--26 lbs gone? w00t w00t! that's what I'm talking about!! good job so far, you may be the inspiration I need to get back on track. looks like your goals are going well so far this week. I need to get my water in, I always do much better when I drink it....i just don't LIKE IT!!

Donna--suffering from inertia :D love it!!!

ian--so, what did the docs say WAS going on with your GF? and, yeah, the mere thought is enough to give one a heart attack. what's going on with learning Korean? if you don't mind me asking

epi--thanks for the kudos on reaching out to the missing. I know that if it wasn't for Mike, I would have given up long ago. but he nags JUST enough that I never will. goals are looking good so far, keep going! I too like yoga, haven't done Tai Chi and haven't a clue what Navrai is. one of my exes did Tai Chi and it was interesting to watch. he always seemed so mellow afterward

Robin--I didn't want to go too hard on Mike, he did me a good job last week, the least I could do was return the favor. If things keep going the way they are right now, you'll probably get to see one of the Wonder Twins patented competitions.

"I was sarcastically commenting on a couple of specific people who definitely have noticed and are too _____ to say anything"
the acronym that I would use to fill in the blank here is "CS". I'll let y'all figure it out for yourselves :)

libby--take the 0.4 loss and roll with it!! I maintained last week, which is a positive thing right now. If you keep up with those goals, you'll be in the 170s in no time! The Pizza Monster is one of my favorite Sesame Street characters. right behind the Cookie Monster. What are my dreams? to get out of double digits for the first time since like Jr High School would be nice.

Carolynn--thanks for starting us off. that's some serious suckage about your DH's email, the danish was justified if you ask me :) HAHAHA, the "mysterious JC" made me chuckle. give it time, you'll be decoding Mike and my acronyms in no time. when he and I get on a roll, it's quite entertaining.

Bubba--I'll get my miles in, don't you worry about me. even if I have to do them on the roads like I used to have to. TBM will just have to follow me and get runneded ober. and dude!!! the vitamins one was a gimme, and you're failing on it? TSK TSK!!!

1: Post daily, Monday-Friday (BF is only off Saturday and Sunday, and seeing as how we work opposite shifts during the week, the only time we really see each other is the weekends. I try to stay off the computer as much as possible during that time)--yes, yes, yes
2: Spend 4+ hours with the Jassimonster--0, 2, 0 *but I've gotten a LOT of laundry done*
3: 6 miles--0, 0, 0 *plan is to get a few of them done tomorrow*
4: 64 oz water daily--no, no, hahahahahahahahahahahaha
5: Lose 1 pound. Seems modest, but it's better than gaining.--not sure yet, -0.2 so far
6: Send out mass pm to all the regulars that aren't here--one down, got 5 more done tonight

So, the goals so far are a mixed bag. I hope to get 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 done with "yes"es all week. The water one always trips me up. So, what's going on with me? Not a lot. I go to work, then swing by my parents' place as many times in a week as I can to see TJC, and then I come home and clean/cook/whatever else needs doing around here. BF informed me last night that he's taking Friday night off of work. He's been waiting for Man of Steel to come out, and Heaven forbid he doesn't get to see it :rolls eyes: But it's cool....we're gonna do dinner first and then catch the movie. We haven't had a Date Night with just the two of us since before we went on vacation in early May. Lately it's been me, him, and his sister and her husband. And while, I have nothing AGAINST his sister and her hubby, it's nice to spend time as just the two of us. We even went on vacation with them. So, I'm pretty stoked about it.....

Okay....off to check the clothes in the dryer. Talk to y'all tomorrow!!!

Today was another good day. I didn't get on the (dreadmill) but I put a lot of elbow grease into cleaning up some old furniture that I found at the road side.
I treated myself with a teaspoon of mint chocolate ice cream (only 12 cal.).
Some times you just need a taste of something that you crave. The trick is to stop after one bite. My calories for the day were under 1000. It's turning out to be a blue week so far.;)

I am going into hospital for more medical tests this morning because things still arn't right since I had the kidney problems starting on May 31st. I havent had anything to eat or drink since last night before 7:30 pm. and this morning I could kill for a glass of water or a coffee. It will be noon before I can eat or drink any thing. Wish me l luck.:)
Tori: Two teaspoons would have led to a bowl full.

Tori - The doctor wasn't very specific, but it could be stress, which I understand since she lives with me. She works 10-14 hours a day, but she doesn't need to worry about things at home since I do 99% of that, but if shes's not pregnant then it's probably the best bet. I still don't trust the doctors though.

I learn Korean because I live in Korea and I need to be able to comunicate with my girlfriend's family, although her sisters can speak just about enough English to get by and I speak just enough Korean to get by, the only problem comes into play when I speak to her parents. But also the fact that almost no one speaks English here it's nice to know a little Korean so I can do more than just order food.
