The poem for this morning is a short one on remembrance and New Orleans.

Oh, I wish I was in the land of Pontch'train,
Old times there are not forgotten;
Look a-weigh,
Look! Beignet!
Look-a I weigh (!!!)
Dixie Land!

Hope: In my youth I loved Stevens poems, especially Harmonium. Still think this is one of the great couplets of modern poetry:
Let be be finale of seem.
The only emperor is the emperor of ice-cream.
Mern: There's a lot of debate now regarding if college is worth the investment. There are still so many opportunities available for your GD. I'm sure it will all work out for the best!

POEM for my niece

Silently entered our hearts
Instantly loved from the start
Eyes so big and bright,
New sights, sounds to delight
Now as you are turning one
A year is already done

Run, laugh, dance and play
Unlimited joy is wished this day

It's not quite finished (need two lines at the end).
I thought since Hope said it's poetry month I would share. My niece is only 9 months old but this came into my head one day.

So much creativity today!! Jenn, what a lovely tribute to your niece. Donna, I love your use of humor in poetry!!! I also love Stevens' line about the emperor of ice cream.

I read somewhere about a woman who sent beautifully decorated boxes to an ailing friend; each one contained a poem. I thought what a lovely gift. I decided to read a poem a day and decided to send one online to a friend (less creative, I know) every day to make sure I read one. I cull books of poetry I love (ee cummings, Dickinson, Rumi, Mary Oliver, etc) use online sites to find new ones. I use one of my daughter's books from college, Stand Up Poetry. There's a good site, Poetry 180, 180 poems chosen by former Poet Laureate Billy Collins. He had poems read over loud speakers in schools, no analysis, just listening. I think poetry intimidates poetry because they think they have to "figure it out." My friend feels this way but I just send them; if she wants to discuss them, I'm fine with it, but I think just sitting with it is fine. I guess I could explain why I love the opening lines of "The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock" so much:" Let us go then, you and I/ when the evening is spread out against the sky/like a patient etherized upon a table..." but why not just open the poem and enjoy it?

Sermon over.

I also agree with Donna. I don't think college is the only option. Think of all the successful people who got that way without training, even under difficult circumstances.

OK now sermon is over.

Default Stuck in the plateau

Hi- I could use some motivation- I am soo stuck on the plateau, and frustrated (have not lost weight for 2-3 weeks). My goal lose 1 lb by Monday April 8.

I have been trying to keep calories to 1200 per day (some days better than others). I'm doing a workout each am for 30 min, either weight training or cardio, then 30 min walk at lunch.

Eating lots of fresh veggies, lean protein, a little fruit. My only snacking has been peanut butter pretzels (and this has been very limited and counted in the daily calories).

Will I ever get past this? Current Weight 155, goal weight 130.

Mary - I could have written your post. What is it about 155? I've been stuck at 155 for the last couple of weeks. The last couple of days I upped the exercise a bit - I think I've finally broken through. Maybe you could add a short interval workout when you get home from work. Even an extra 10 min might be enough to get that scale to budge.

********

Wonderful poems, Donna. Loved the "Look a-weigh".

***
1. Calories under 1200 (I've lowered it this week) 987, 1253,

Today started off, just not the same
I had a meeting at my NOLA office, and it was lame
The food that they had, was not on my list
I had to give in, before I slit my wrist
I had two giant Muffins, that were good to taste
I didn't miss a crumb, I left no waste
So now I pick up the pieces, and fix the rest of my day
For tomorrow I hop on the scale, to see what I weigh
