7 Day Motivational Thread Starting August 26 2013 - Luck is no excuse

Well I thought I better start it off this week since I'm not doing so well today and I need a reason to stop eating.

Goals:

1. Under 2000 calories per day
2. Over 3000 calories exercise for the week
3. Jenn's Veggie challenge (I'll go for 35 instead of 50)
4. Less than 3 icecreams for the week (my gf bought about 25 on Sunday and they look so tasty just sitting there in the freezer in this 35C [that's like 1000F] weather)

Robingen 08-25-2013 09:32 PM

Morning Ian and thanks for starting us off. Nice goals for the week. So as far as the fruit and veg challenge let's just all go for our goal and report on it. You say 35, Libby 49. The recommended servings is 63! a week.

This am I am 163.1, I don't know if it's possible to get to 160 this week but I am going for it.

Goals:
1. Drink lots of water
2. 7 hours of exercise
3. 50 servings fruit and veg
4. Post daily.

I am starting my day with a green smoothie today, and so it begins!

Mern 08-26-2013 12:10 AM

Great-granddaughter Camden born to my former live-in granddaughter 8-22-13 7lb. .08 oz. and 20.5 in. long. Granddaughter and baby doing quite well. :)

I HAVE TO STAY with the group. Back up to 233 lbs., stuffed full of emotional eating again. The baby's birth followed two weeks of multiple family crises--ugh!

Good time to get back to logging, healthful eating and exercise since my grandkids start back to school today.

Goals:
Calories 1200-1600
Net carb limit daily average 25g
Fiber minimum daily average 25g
Sat Fat limit 12% of daily calories
Dietary Cholesterol limit average 250mg
Protein minimum daily average 120g
Fruit/veggie target 42 because of carb limits
Exercise 5 days 1/2 hour
Water 64 oz.

RenewedSoul 08-26-2013 12:54 AM

I'm having a rough past few days, so I probably will not be on much. Times like this makes it hard and is quite the test on me. I lost 1 pound last week. I'm keeping my goals simple and short. I will log everything I eat and keep it under 1,200 calories a day. Have a good week everyone and good luck.

RenewedSoul 08-26-2013 12:56 AM

Oh, I forgot to say congrats on the new great-granddaughter Mern!

Mern 08-26-2013 01:07 AM

RenewedSoul, thanks for your congrats. And congrats on your lb. lost last week.

I've been through a really rough patch lately, too, so my thoughts and heart are with you as you await better times ahead. Big hug to ya!

jjrudd 08-26-2013 01:30 AM

Congrats Mern! I'm sure the baby will be very loved!!
Ian it's not MY challenge, I think Robin thought of it.

So since I'm in for the challenge I'd better make some goals

GOALS
1. 6 servings each day--which would give me 42 for the week
I find weekends I don't usually eat as many veggies so to get to Sun with that many would be something!
2. Exercise 4X for 30 min
3. At least 6 glasses of water
4. Stay within carb limit (if I eat more veggies it shouldn't be a problem)
5. Lose 2lb

Jenn

canary52 08-26-2013 01:34 AM

I started a thread but I will join yours. Thanks, Ian!!! Miiiiike, please delete mine!!!!

Good morning all. It's a gray day here but I can see blue skies ahead!!!

I fell off BIGTIME this weekend but I am back READY TO ROLL.

Goals:
1) healthy eating with one cheat day or meals instead of seven:
2) walk or gym 3x this week (gentle)
3) stretch daily
4) writing a priority
5) meditation
6) stay off internet while working
7) study Spanish
8) stay positive
9) lose 2+ pounds of "indulgence" weight
10) I'm in for 35 servings of fruit and veg

Started with a veggie omelette.

Mern: Congrats great gram-ma!!! And you are great. So glad to see you. I'm sure the baby is precious. I am sorry to hear of your hard times.

RenewedSoul, I have been in such a dark hopeless place this week and this morning I have decided to try to pull out of that. So we are with you; you are so welcome here. Come as you are. Big hugs.

Ian, I feel that temptation of the ice cream screaming at ya but don't give in (or if you do, just a little!!!)

Robin, I am trying for a little under 3 pounds. We can do this, right?

libby116 08-26-2013 01:53 AM

Good morning all.
Ian: Thanks for starting us off.
Robin: You can do it.
RS: Keep your chin up. Better days are ahead and congrats on a pound loss.
Mern: Glad to see you back and congrats on great grand daughter.

I did fantastic last week and am down to 171.6 Whoo Hoo.
My goals are:
170 by the end of the week
3 fruit and 4 veg every day
8 glasses of water
exercise every day (even if it's just twiddling my thumbs and deep breathing)

My surgery is on Thursday morning and for the rest of the week I will be flat on my back drinking Glucerna and water and any thing else the guys bring me. Stay positive

01gt4.6 08-26-2013 02:59 AM

I'm in.... where's Terri? I'm back up to 200.4.

Trying to stay positive and not bring the group down, some stuff is in white.

This will be a hard week for me. I'll have a funeral to attend and I'll have to dig deep within to not send someone to the hospital. I'll have to remember that there's a time and place for everything.

My goals will be basic.

Health and Fitness
1) Lose 1 pound
2) Drink 100oz water/day
3) 3 fruits/veggies/day
4) Workout 3 times

Other
5) Keep Calm and don't get arrested
6) Write 2 policies
7) Two RAK's (not knocking someone's teeth down his throat WILL count as one RAK, considering he is deserving of it);)

Mern 08-26-2013 03:23 AM

My avatar is my new great-granddaughter, Camden Most of the time I've seen her when she was awake, she was either spending a lot of time sticking her tongue out or yawning. LOL

Thanks for the congrats from everyone.

Mike, my heart and my thoughts are with you in this troubled time.

I'll be back to catch up after I exercise.

cjohnson728 08-26-2013 05:03 AM

Hi everyone...

I am embarrassed at how long it's been since I've been on. Life, mainly work, kicked my tail the better part of the summer. I. Am. Exhausted. Consequently, I haven't been doing a great job taking care of myself, or any kind of job on that, really...but this is one of the steps in my renewed promise to give myself at least a little time. You all are such a wonderful resource and I need to make time for you again. I'm so glad to see so many familiar faces, and looking forward to getting to know the new ones as well. Mern, I am glad to get back here just in time to see your beautiful granddaughter! Congratulations :).

I will get back on later today or tonight and get a couple keep-it-simple-stupid goals down, but I was afraid if I didn't do this now, it would be another day-week-month going by that I didn't, and I can't afford that.

Mel-Mc 08-26-2013 05:10 AM

It looks like bad weeks were epidemic last week. I'm sending everyone a virtual cooties shot to help keep this week better. :D

My own week went from the Wednesday/Thursday of no control over my food into the weekend of lack of control over my food. Today is better, but only by virtue of the fact that it is the first day of school and the professors are keeping me too busy to even grab one of the granola bars they are handing out to the students.

Goals:
Accurately record everything I consume
Keep calories between 1200-1400
Report in here every day
Walk at lunch 4 days
Use the yoga CD at least once.

jjrudd 08-26-2013 06:14 AM

Welcome back Cassie!!!

taubele 08-26-2013 09:06 AM

Ian: I like your goals. There's ice-cream in our freezer too, CURSES!

Robin: I need to add "post daily" to my goals, and I will!

Mern: MERN! Congratulations great-grandma!!!!! LOVELY to see you :D

RS: Hugs for your rough week :( Congrats on the -1 lb.!

Hope: Let's not even get started on the weekend, aye carumba. Monday never looked so good.

libby: congrats on your fantastic week!!!!

Mike: I'm here, I just had a crazy-busy Monday morning at work, although I finally just completed all my tasks for the day. Still need to get out and run some errands. I wouldn't back out on our deal!! <3

Cassie: CASSIE!!!!! So good to see you! I'm just back on the train too. Can't wait to catch up :)

Mel: I should add lunch-walking to my goals, but it's really weird to do it on campus, because all the boys are on the track, haha!!

OKAY SO.

The weekend was crazy. Who knew one got so busy AFTER a wedding? You know what it is, it's the crazy semester starting up and kicking my butt again, and since I got married, I didn't get ANY pre-gaming done. I am running around like a mad woman trying to get all my syllabi done, though I knocked out three today and just have one more to go. THEN I need to figure out the brand-spanking-new course management system and upload a poopton of things online, AND get my other (big) syllabus done. I also have a ton of errands to run today and a get-together at a colleague's house tonight. The freshmen are on campus and already hopelessly lost, and they LOOK SO YOUNG. I hit 30 and now everyone is a whippersnapper ;)

Oh, and I'm also on the job market and need to get applications out in the next two weeks. *whimper*. LOL. I CAN DO IT, RIGHT?!

Since I am getting back on the gravy train this week (or maybe the don't-eat-the-gravy-stupid train?), I am keeping myself to four simple goals:

1) Log every damn thing I put into my mouth and post daily, good, bad, or ugly.
2) Drink 64 oz, of water a day, no excuse, alcohol does not count
3) Weigh in on Friday with new scale
4) Stop the mindless snacking

I want to add in exercise goals, but I know it's not going to happen this week until I catch up with the semester. Any exercise I do is just going to have to be a bonus, I don't want to set up for failure.

I have a few life goals too:

1) Stick with the new hair regimen
2) Courses done and up online by Wednesday morning
3) Jobs spreadsheet Weds afternoon/Thursday; at least updated to current
4) Post up some wedding pictures for you all!

Will try to post earlier tomorrow, since I do better posting in the morning.

~Terri

4. Stay within carb limit (if I eat more veggies it shouldn't be a problem) YES--well under

~Terri

you can do it. I know, you knew I was going to ask you about this goal, right?

Kocialapcia 08-26-2013 10:10 AM

Mern: Yawning Camden is the cutest picture I have seen in a long time! You must be totally awed by interacting with her!

Mike: Hang in there.

I like the vegetable/fruit servings challenge and I have already been working on it inspired by Renewed Soul. The 10-12 servings of vegetables/fruit that I am already averaging are not a problem, though. The problem is the daily serving of red wine (think resveratrol and antioxidants for heart health), the serving of dark (healthy, right?) chocolate, the healthy handful of raw, unsalted nuts, the healthy Greek yogurt - all to the tune of 2,000+ calories of damn healthy stuff! :o

I guess I run just enough not to put on weight on this obscene number, but the number I see on the scale is not budging, either!

New week - new chance!

Best of luck to all of us!

taubele 08-26-2013 10:30 AM

I thought someone might ;)

My hair is naturally quite wavy; I've been blow-drying it straight for years just to not have to deal with the waves, because they require more care. However, as I've gotten older and particularly this last summer, the waves have started to assert themselves. Short of a chemical straighten, I just couldn't blow them out anymore.

So, the next best thing to do is embrace the waves/curls and try to care for them properly. So I now have very wavy hair; I've been on a new regimen for a week and a half that involves washing/detangling my hair in a particular wavy and using some products. I'm honestly still figuring it all out, but my hair looks suuuuper different to me!

Robingen 08-26-2013 10:39 AM

Goals:
1. Drink lots of water: M-Ok
2. 7 hours of exercise: M-70 minutes walk/run
3. 50 servings fruit and veg: M-11
4. Post daily: M-Y

Toxic schedules, guys, that's what we've been struggling with. Cassie, welcome back, you perhaps have something to say about toxic schedules? And Teri? And Mern? Mel-mc? Others?

Kocia: I don't know how you could ever go over, with all those servings. 11 today and I am stuffed! Good thing you are running I guess.

Congrats to those who stayed the course last week, it paid off, right Libby?

Jen, despite your headache and no exercise you did very well with your goals.

Mike I guess you will have to fill us in on how those cloaked goals go! I think we can handle knowing what they are though, can't be THAT bad. Hey, you are here:)

libby116 08-26-2013 11:28 AM

170 by the end of the week
calories: M-863
3 fruit and 4 veg every day: M-Y
8 glasses of water: Y,
exercise every day: Y,

We had a bad thunder storm that knocked out our phone lines and I have some important calls to make. Other than that I had another good day.
The fruit and veg challenge was a really good idea.

01gt4.6 08-26-2013 12:45 PM

Hope, a friend/coworker from work. She was diagnosed a year ago with cancer. Grrrr tried to do it in white but my damn phone is acting stupid.

Mel-Mc 08-26-2013 01:28 PM

Goals:
Accurately record everything I consume: M=Y
Keep calories between 1200-1400: M=1875
Report in here every day: M=Y
Walk at lunch 4 days: M=Y
Use the yoga CD at least once.

Robingen, my schedule has actually eased up for now. The first day of classes at the college is actually a relief as all the big lead-up events are over and it's back to routine. And August 24 is the end of birthday/ anniversary season in my family so the endless supply of party food fades away until Thanksgiving. Now I just have to use that routine to my benefit. I was doing well today until I found that half-eaten chocolate bar under some papers on the end table. Eating well is so easy during harvest season when friends and family are just handing you veggies. :)

Edit: I went back and figured out how much candy leaped into my mouth. I'm way over on calories but I feel better knowing exactly how bad it was.

cjohnson728 08-26-2013 01:43 PM

Thanks, Jenn & Terri. Terri, how was your wedding? Do you have pic somewhere? Sounds like your life is hectic; wishing you a wonderful semester and best of luck with the job application process.

Brainless goals, all I can handle:

1. Log food.
2. Check in daily.
3. Get some exercise.
4. Set boundaries if I need to.

Best wishes to everyone this week on goals.

adyndravo1 08-26-2013 02:20 PM

Hello all. Looks like I am not the only oone having a bad day diest wise. I have gone over my max today for the second time in 2 weeks. I lost 1.5 pound last week. It was fresh and local and so ripe it smelled so good when I picked it up.

Last night went to a restaurant so my gf could sell an insurance policy and the guy wanted to go out drinking afterwards. At the next restaurant this taekwondo instructor started chatting to us and he too wanted to go out drinking so we hit up another place. A good 3000 calories worth of alcohol later we finally made it back home and when I logged the food I almost had a heart attack, those numbers add up really quickly [deleted sad face] At least there was a good number of veggies in the food.

Goals:

1. Under 2000 calories per day
M-5401
2. Over 3000 calories exercise for the week
M-0
3. Robin's Veggie challenge (I'll go for 35 instead of 50)
M-8
4. Less than 3 icecreams for the week (my gf bought about 25 on Sunday and they look so tasty just sitting there in the freezer in this 35C [that's like 1000F] weather)
M-1

Mern 08-26-2013 11:06 PM

I usually take baby steps getting back into exercise but forced myself to finish the whole half hour by susbtituting mini squats with resistance band work for three minutes of power walking in place half way through and then resumed the regular workout.

Monday Report:

Calories 1200-1600 1389
Net carb limit daily average 25g 19g
Fiber minimum daily average 25g 38g
Sat Fat limit 12% of daily calories 6%
Dietary Cholesterol limit average 250mg 195mg
Protein minimum daily average 120g 131g
Fruit/veggie servings minimum 6 per day 6.5
Exercise 5 days 1/2 hour YES
Water 64 oz. maybe 40

jjrudd 08-26-2013 11:58 PM

Cassie, I think there is a picture of Terri in the previous thread.
Good job on the workout Mern, but what happened on the water? BTW your granddaughter is so precious. My niece is FINALLY walking. My brother sent me a picture this morning. I love baby walking--it looks like waddling. Had an argument with my Mom last night so this brightened my day!

Jenn

libby116 08-27-2013 12:45 AM

The phones are back on so I can make my important calls this morning. I saw 170.8 on the scale so I am changing my month end goal to 169. Whoo Hoo
The fruit and veg challenge was such a good idea.
Mern: What a sweet baby girl.
RS: You are the champion.
Robin: It was a good week for me, I just have to keep it going.

Speaking of ice cream, my DH bought some so I got some frozen fruit pops,
only 50 cal. each so that is MY new treat at the end of the day. I have given up diet coke because the sweetener was giving me headaches. No more artificial sweetener for me. Some body ate all the cherries.
I am having a banana blueberry smoothie for breakfast. Yum. :D Have a great day all.

Mern 08-27-2013 01:27 AM

Thanks to all for your congrats on the birth of my great-granddaughter. My avatar, different from yesterday, is another shot of her. Yeah, I'm doting. LOL

So many of us have to perk up our attitudes about our life situations and I know full well that is not easy for many of us. I was lucky to find a good day during which I stopped to count blessings amid all the family crises we've had lately.

Terri! Hi! I've been gone for so long that I didn't know you got married! Wishing you and DH a lifetime of happiness together! :D LOL on the freshman looking so young to you. I'm more than twice as old as you, so I didn't even think of that. I have grandkids older than college freshmen. LOL Best wishes for a wonderful, fulfilling school year and another successful job hunt. What are you teaching this year? LOL on the "don't-eat-the-gravy-stupid-train." So wise to set simple goals until you get your school year started.

Libby, kudos on your recent weight loss! Glad you had another good day yesterday. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you Thursday and during your recovery. :) Great that you got your phone service back! Wise choice on the fruit pops! Thanks for your sweet comments on baby Camden's pic. I wish I could have bananas--they're too high carb for me. But I can enjoy banana flavored dairy blend--faux yogurt, but healthful and low carb.

Jenn, I hope you're feeling better today. Thanks for your comment on my great-granddaughter's pic. On my water--I just got busy and forgot because I had gotten out of the habit of making sure I got in at least 64 oz. I'll put a note by the computer to remind me since I get on here a couple times a day. Wonderful that your niece is a bright spot in your life. How old is she? I love that learning to walk experience, too. I hope things are OK between you and your Mom now. Big cyberhug to ya.

Ian, thanks for putting "Luck is no excuse" in the title of this week's thread. It looks like many of us have been into emotional eating--and in the past that was so unlike me. Best wishes on curbing the social drinking. I know that's not easy and the calories surely do add up.

Cassie, great to see you! If you have time to read this thread, you will see you are not alone. Several of us are returning this week after being away for an extended period of time. How wise to wedge your foot in the door by posting a hello and posting your simple (they're not brainless) goals. Those goals are not always easy to achieve in our busy lives. Kudos to you!

Hope! Welcome back! Big hugs and best wishes for getting back into a happy place.

Nyda, hi. Congratulations on your weight loss last week! Sorry about the thunderstorms and rain waking you up. I love cantaloupe! Glad you got to enjoy that!

Kocial, thanks for your comment on my great-granddaughter's yawning picture. Her great-aunt who took the picture is a professional photographer and she said that's her favorite shot. I'm on top of the world right now. :) Wow, you certainly do eat healthfully. Best wishes on your scale moving--you'll get it figured out.

Robin, I am bound and determined to deal with my toxic schedule caused by my grandkids not qualifying for busses due to the district's financial crisis--no high school busses at all and busses won't pick up grandkids from my home even though they go right by--they will pick up kids only from their own homes. My daughter starts work at 7:30AM, so brings the kids to my house in the morning and I get them off to school. And now the main road I have to travel will be westbound one way only from tomorrow until the end of the calendar year. So instead of my four round trips to schools leaving at 7:30, 8:45, 1:00 and 2:45 18 miles total, it will now be a freakin' 35 miles daily driving due to the detours. I don't get much done between school trips. BUT in another month or so DH will be able to help me with the grandkids' transportation.

Mel-Mc--a virtual cooties shot. Thanks for the great chuckle! :D Wishing you a wonderful and happy new school year of success and healthful eating. You could have done a lot worse--great that your knowing the candy bar calorie overage is beneficial to you--using that to knowledge to get back on track.

Mern 08-27-2013 01:40 AM

Jenn, thanks for posting that Terri's wedding pic was on last week's thread.

Cassie, the link directly to that picture is https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot...12136113_n.jpg

Terri, OMG, girl! You looked GORGEOUS in that dress and the pic of you and Michael is ADORABLE. You can see the love shining from your faces. :D Oh, and you're so welcome for the birthday PM.

Mern, she just turned 14 mos (4 days ago). She is such a beautiful girl (and yes I'm biased). She's special because she reminds me so much of my sister in her facial expressions and mannerisms.

Thanks for the welcomes back...

Terri, the photo is gorgeous. Hope the day was everything you expected and more.

Mern, keep enjoying that beautiful girl. What a precious time! I remember you talking about your GD when she became pregnant; it's so nice to see she had a healthy baby who will have a family full of love.

Hope, yes, so good to see everyone and looking forward to meeting the new folks as well.

Robin, I didn't ignore your toxic schedule reference, but I'm in denial...or rather, in the back of the room slouching down in the back of my seat.

Will update goals later; just wanted to make the connection while making myself sit and eat a real breakfast before running out the door. Another jail day, so no water goals for me this week ;).

Mike: I am a very silly person and I missed what you had written in white - my complete and sincere condolences to you. Pixelated hugs.

Robin: I hear you on toxic schedules. What generally happens to me is that I have difficulty saying "no", and that is something I'll be working on for all of my life, I think. My schedule also just seems to "peak" at certain times of the year where all I can do is basically hang on for the ride. I struggle with procrastination. I also adore my students, and I probably do a little too much for them (they're college students - finding the balance of 'I'm here to help you' and 'I'm not your mother' is hard for me!). I end up putting myself last. Being here has been the only thing that's ever helped me with that!

Cassie: The wedding was fabulous, thanks for asking!! I'm about to pop up a bunch of pics at the end of this post, as the professional photos finally came! Life is hectic - like Mel, I can't wait until first day of classes is overwith (on Thursday, here) as it seems like one can sort of take a big breath from all the endless 'welcome back', 'welcome, freshmen', 'welcome, new members' and 'here we go!' parties, of which there seem to be at least three every week. We also have a new President here, so there have been a LOT of parties welcoming him to every group of the college. Sheesh.

adyndravo1: I love a good thunderstorm in the middle of the night!

ian: CURSES ICE CREAM! Luckily DH seems to be eating it; I haven't indulged yet.

libby: Totally jealous of your smoothie! Grats on the scale number, woohoo!

Mern: Hey lady! Well we JUST got married about two weeks ago, so you're not too far out of the loop. This semester I'm teaching Psych 101, Sensation & Perception, Research in Neuroscience. I also have 5 seniors doing thier "capstone" year-long research projects with me, and I need to figure out what I'm going to be doing with them, haha! I'm not sure I'm as wise as you but I'll take the compliments!!! Thank you for the compliments on that picture! I'll post some more below so you can get a better sense of the dress etc.

Hope: Lol, nothing is WRONG with wavy hair, I'm just a lazy girl and don't like the extra care I have to give it when wavy!!! I'll get used to it eventually, and when it's behaving it does look nice! Looks like you had a good Monday, good job!

For my coloring scheme below -

Green = met goal (not necessarily happy with the numbers, especially with the calorie counts, haha, but goal is met!)
Red = missed goal
Blue = goal in progress or not applicable on a certain day

1) Log every damn thing I put into my mouth and post daily, good, bad, or ugly. M: 1,968
2) Drink 64 oz, of water a day, no excuse, alcohol does not count M: Maybe 16? Yikes
3) Weigh in on Friday with new scale M-Th: N/A
4) Stop the mindless snacking M: Snacked mindlessly with lunch. All other snacks were planned snacks

I want to add in exercise goals, but I know it's not going to happen this week until I catch up with the semester. Any exercise I do is just going to have to be a bonus, I don't want to set up for failure.

I have a few life goals too:

1) Stick with the new hair regimen M: yes
2) Courses done and up online by Wednesday morning M: Got 3 of 4 done
3) Jobs spreadsheet Weds afternoon/Thursday; at least updated to current M: No progress
4) Post up some wedding pictures for you all! M: See below!!!

This shot is of me and my grandfather, who is very ill and couldn't make the wedding. We had a special sitting beforehand where I wore my dress so he could see it, and we got some pictures!

Four image limit!!! Geez. More pictures!

A full-body shot of the dress so you can get a sense of how I was looking the day of! It fell very well in the shot. DH is hamming it up with the Rolls Royce we rented for the day.

This one's a keeper!

This one is, I think, my favorite "couple" picture - we were goofing around

https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.n...38580081_n.jpg

We practiced our dancing/dip for awhile and we NAILED it. Please note that my dress had fallen out of it's bustle at the time on the dance floor, and I managed not to fall! Hooray!
