I am addicted to potato chips!

I am addicted to potato chips. If they are in the house I'll eat them.
The easy answer is don't buy them, but I don't live alone. The wife
says she should not be forced to give up chips just because I have a problem
with them. She does not have a weight problem. How can I break this addiction?
Yes this is much more than a bad habit.

Lard.

I think this post, advice given to another member of this site in the SAME situation, pretty much sums up all the advice you need to embrace and then internalize:

You can ask for help, but you won't always get it. You're right, you don't have to eat it, but if you're flagging, there are a few things you can do. Find what works for you. Make yourself drink two glasses of water before you eat it; make yourself wait 20 minutes and see if you still want it. Go journal on FD or otherwise the pros and cons of eating it. Leave the house. Go in the bathroom with a book till the others have eaten theirs. Ask them to buy flavors for themselves that aren't particularly tempting to you. Ask them if they will hide it, keep it in a locked car trunk, etc. Call a friend. Post on FD and say it's happening, then agree to report back to be accountable, put the scale in front of the fridge, tack your bathing suit to the pantry door. Make a deal with yourself by which, if you eat it, you have to do some sort of onerous exercise. Tell your family they are free to do/eat what they please, but you are setting limits and you will stick to them (you would like their cooperation but will do it alone if you have to)...the list goes on and on. I've done each and every one of these things.

As the addicts would say in the meetings, there is no easier, softer way to do this. If there were, it would have been done by now. The more excuses you let yourself make, the longer it will take. It takes a while to break habits; if you have to beg, borrow, or steal your way to two or three weeks of white-knuckling food sobriety, so be it. Just do it. Focus on yourself and what you need.

What I would't do just to make it through ONE DAY.

VitoVino 02-09-2012 06:07 AM

I'm sorry to hear you struggling like this. It really sounds like you need to plead with the Mrs. to at least give you a few weeks of not having this temptation around the house. After that, you'll employ the suggestions above.

RunbikeSki 02-09-2012 06:10 AM

You might also try a substitution. The old saying "I bet you can't eat just one" is so true. Pretzels are a little better, or buy your own baked chips. I know not quite the same thing, but we're talking small steps forward - right?

VitoVino 02-09-2012 06:17 AM

Sound advice, RBS. Substitutions are always the right step forward. And your post reminded me of else something I 'read' this morning... :D

FYI, I'm not 'there' yet, but I'm well on the way. 51 years of habitually eating poorly cannot be overcome overnight.

Meditate on the words in blue, LP. Think on them hard, for they are the KEY to overcoming.

wildbeanerz 02-09-2012 06:41 AM

Maybe you could try no salt added potato chips. Don't laugh. They are pretty good and in moderation are not that bad.

cjohnson728 02-09-2012 08:29 AM

Can she hide them or keep them locked in her car?

I swear I've done this. Anything in a pinch.

Good idea. Put the chips where the sun don't shine.

You are totally within your rights to ask her nicely, "Hey honey-britches, I've got a big hurdle to climb and I need your help." then just tell her, what a lucky man you are to have her, and that you are really trying to be a good guy, and keep to your diet but it is really difficult with the temptations all around and that you love being at home but when the temptations are there too it is just really hard to succeed. If you are sincere and thoughtful, I think any decent person should oblige.

lardpuppy 02-09-2012 09:48 AM

She says it's too much trouble to do this.
I am going to have to do this on my own. I have lost 30 pounds in the last 6 mo but I have stalled out even though I need to lose 70 more.
I never have any bills in my wallet other than $20s at work so I can not be
tempted by the vending machines. Time to get off my "soap box" and just
do it.

Lard

Kathy13118 02-09-2012 01:11 PM

Have your own supply of Lay's non-fat potato chips. They use Olestra to get them to be non-fat. They have some taste, close enough to the original to fool your taste buds, short-term. The Olestra has never upset my stomach and I really love the taste of chips.

whatevsk 02-09-2012 01:46 PM

Maybe ask her to hide the chips from you?

Or, train your body to crave other things! Try stove top popcorn with herbs, or make your own potato chips using sweet potatoes.

I'm going to second the popcorn suggestion. I purchased 94% fat free microwave popcorn, it's 15 calories a cup, so maybe 100-140 calories for the whole bag (depending on the brand), it satisfies the salty thing and fills you up for about the same calories as a serving of potato chips. Just for fun, weigh out a serving of potato chips, it's not very many like 7-10 chips, set it side by side with the bag of popped popcorn and let yourself choose one. Believe me you'll go with the popcorn every time because it's way bigger and it smells better. Another really good salty snack is dill pickles, they are 5-20 calories each and after I've eaten several and slugged down a bunch of water, the salt craving is gone. Another good snack for a salty craving is a 1/2 cup of fat free cottage cheese with 5 grams of grated parm mixed in.

Jennafrudo 02-12-2012 08:42 PM

If you like them, eat them.... Factor in a whole bag in your day's calories and it won't affect your weight-loss. Although if you blow 200 cals on a packet of crisps it just means you're eating less of everything else and might feel hungry as a result. A choice, in other words

If you really don't want to eat them any more, don't buy them... Eat other things. I think a lot of us have foods that we tend to avoid knowing we'll overeat them if we get our hands on some. Just takes a little determination to walk past the fixture rather than dive in.

Unless you're eating them by the crate they're not stopping you losing 5lbs.

Potato chips have a carcinogen in them:
Acrylamide - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Even thin people should eat them in moderation only.

Mmm, yummy!

I'm glad I've never had a potato chip addiction, although I must admit french fries have been a slight problem. I avoid them both now, like the plague.

fastfood4life 03-02-2012 08:59 AM

Unless it's the sodium that you think is the problem, this helped me forget that potato chips existed.

Baked kale chips

You can do an easy google search to find a number of recipes.

all you really need is olive oil, salt & kale.

-put kale in a big mixing bowl (i usually do a large amount of kale at a time so i'm only making them once a week or so)
-drizzle some olive oil on them (experiment with what amount works for you, a little oil goes a long way) - toss the kale in the bowl to coat it in olive oil
-add salt to your kale

bake in low heat 350-375 for 20 - 30 minutes. turning every 10 minutes or so.

There is some experimenting needed for personal preference, when to add the salt (bowl, baking sheet or after they're done) and cooking temp and times, to find the right recipe for you.

If done right, they are crispy & salty just like chips. I've had batches that were crispy when first made but softened in the fridge, a couple minutes under the oven's broiler setting fixes that when you're ready to have a snack.

Give a try. Good luck

You are stronger than the chips! You have lost 30 POUNDS!!! My goodness! I am so proud of you! Puppy, go to the dog food aisle or the birdseed aisle at the grocery store and go lift up one of those 30 pound bags of dog food, or birdseed. It's big and dead weight. You have LOST THAT MUCH!!! I often times go to the feed store and plop a 40 pound bag of horse chow on my shoulder and walk around the store with it and then put it back and leave, just to remind myself how much I have accomplished. Perhaps that can be your motivation to "just do it" when it comes to the "trigger foods"?

I like this. Recently I picked up 2 twenty pound containers of kitty litter and thought "I used to walk around with this all day long" and "I wonder how much of it was actually around my gut?". That's a good motivating tool, for sure.

I know the feeling

I am new to the fitday boards...though not new to dieting or dieting message boards. When I saw your post I had to reply.

Like you, I am a chip-aholic. Tons of good advice posted here...but I know when that urge comes if it's there you give in to them..and it often starts a whole array of cravings. At least for me. The past month I experienced some of the strongest cravings for chips and other carbs that I've had in many years. A knee injury has prevented exercise and perhaps that had something to do with it. Not sure but whatever it was as many things as I tried I could not control it. Even the Kale chips which usually works did not satisfy. Then I ordered the saffron extract supplement I had seen on Dr. Oz. It did nothing the first 5 days. Day 6 was much better and now after 12 days I have no cravings for anything. I am not one for pills or miracle cures..but it might be worth a try for you.
Good luck
Cher

Tutsbear 04-12-2012 11:54 AM

There are so many good suggestions here! I just want to say that I am in a similar situation to yourself. My boyfriend whom I live with buys all kinds of junk food and he will eat it right in front of me. I don't ask him not to buy it, and I have to use self restraint to keep myself from eating it too. Sometimes it is too hard and I just give in. I highly recommend buying yourself something that you can eat when you just can't keep yourself from giving in.
(this is not when I'm on the HCG diet, because I can't eat anything even close to a potato chip on the diet) I buy goldfish crackers because they have a very large serving size for a lot lower calories than regular chips.
I also buy the quaker "quakes" I like the ranch and the sea salt and black pepper flavors. They are pretty low fat and I think they taste pretty good. My boyfriend will even eat them and he is VERY finicky.
Another suggestion you might try is instead of eating chips eat some green beans, garbonzo beans, or white kidney beans. I know that this is a poor substitution for chips, but trust me. Half a can and you feel full and don't want to eat chips anymore. But you should always have a low calorie substitute for yourself in case you have a weak moment. I hope some of this helps...

Kathy13118 04-13-2012 04:26 AM

See if your digestive system tolerates Olestra - try the LIGHT potato chips that Lay's makes with this. Not everyone likes them. I love them. It's my junk food 'fix' for when I crave salty and crunchy AND fatty.

dbain1990 04-14-2012 09:02 AM

I also love chips. It's something about the crunch and salt. I buy the one or two ounce bags from Sam's. It still gives me my chips, but it limits my quanity. I wish you luck on beating your potato chip addiction.

Try to avoid potato chips it will increase your body fat

Homemade potato chips

Hi! I too love potato chips!
i read from a newspaper about this Microwave DIY potato chip maker/vegetable slicer crisp. maybe you can search the internet for this.
it says that you can make your own potato chips minus the oil.
this is good for us who diet! You might want to try it.
I was not able to buy one since it is not available in out country :(

janellen5 05-07-2012 02:47 PM

janellen5

I had the same dilema. My husband finally conceded not to eat them in front of me and hide them

Happyhawk 05-10-2012 03:00 AM

Is your wife somehow invested in you being overweight? It would really bother me if my spouse was not considerate enough to make a small and probably temporary accommodation to support my health. Surely she can eat chips at work or other places where the temptation is not there for you.

If you can even have one day of a "victory" I think it will go a long way to being stronger the next day and then the next. Good luck.

Yes this is much more than a bad habit.

Lard.

Have discovered edame in the shell, frozen section. . .with sea salt. Picksweet used to make it in a small box, but the bag can be steamed. . .I measure it out then use a microwave Tupperware.
The salt is on the shell, so when you get the edame it's a nice blend of crunch and a good salt.
Good luck!

Never married, so this is bad advice. . .Have the wife buy 1 individual bag at a time. . .remind her she is saving your life. . .I think she'll like the edame with sea salt!

Annawoodford 04-10-2013 07:58 PM

You can probably eat Baked Kale Chips. People rave about this recipe and say it is the best substitute for potato chips.

Kathy13118 04-11-2013 05:04 AM

If your wife smoked and you were trying to give up smoking, would she smoke in front of you? Ask her if that would happen, and what she would think of that situation. Then discuss.

I hear you. I am a man too and love salty and crunchy. My wife loves Ice Cream. I can leave that milky stuff alone for weeks.

I have gone to Pop Chips which are fewer calories. If you have to buy them yourself, do so and tell your wife that these are for you and not her. She will probably start eating your chips since they taste really great.

Kudos to you for avoiding chips for so long! Even though salty things are not typically one of my cravings, I have discovered Special K Cracker Chips. They come in potato chip flavors and taste similar to Pringles or baked chips, they have only 110 calories and 2.5 grams fat for 27 chips. And, best of all for me, not only do they taste good, they make me fill full!

frendlyfit 07-26-2013 01:05 AM

You can see good recipes on this page of the Dukan diet

djwayne 07-26-2013 03:51 AM

I used to be addicted to potato chips myself. I've found that if you slice a cucumber really thin, then add salt, you'll find these are better than chips.
