I'm pretty sure there's no trail available. I love the PC version and pretty much use it exclusively now. My only reservation would be the database--it you're not happy with the on-line one, you probably won't like the PC version any better.
One great feature of the PC version is the "recipe builder" where you can drag and drop multiple ingredients into a new custom food really easily. I know building a custom food database is time consuming, but you only have to do it once.
