inaccurate calorie counts?
The calorie counts are ridiculously divergent on several foods. I have examples.
3 sample calorie counts versus actual food packaging. yes, I have carefully checked the portion sizes listed on the food packaging. that is not the problem.
Birds Eye yellow corn: 140 calories per cup. Fitday yellow corn: 350 cal per cup!
Birds Eye broccoli: 30 calories per cup. Fitday broccoli: 100 calories per cup.
Food Lion cheese tortellini: 180 calories per cup. Fitday cheese tortellini: about 400 calories per cup.
This makes no sense. I am fairly sure it's illegal for companies to lie on the food packaging, so they should be accurate. There is absolutely NO WAY that corn is 350 calories per cup. Where are these crazy numbers coming from and when will they be corrected?
It's not clear to me when I read the nutrition data on a package whether they are talking about cooked or the frozen pieces. So, the best thing, I guess, is to go by the weight they use.
The corn does appear in fitday as corn that was frozen and boiled, and that has more reasonable caloric value. But I can't imagine what yellow corn has so many calories in a cup unless it's cornmeal that has not been cooked.
If I use frozen corn, for example, I just put in the information as a custom food. Safer that way - you ate that so that's pretty accurate to use.
Thanks. I've been cross checking with Calorie King whenever I have my doubts. I also read some articles about companies lying on their labels but that is usually on processed foods that are marketed as "low cal" and that's not even what I eat because I don't trust that processed junk. I get a few things (like the frozen tortellini or a jar of tomato sauce) that are somewhat pre-prepared from time to time but I am usually cooking vegetables, grains/starches, and meats from scratch, from fresh. So if there's like a variation on the broccoli 50 cal vs. 100 cal... you see where it gets crazy fast. lol.

If something like cheese tortellini is off by that much, just create it as a custom food.
