For the first time in 3 tries ran the entire 3 miles up (albeit slowly, but consistently). Hit the 5 mile downhill and the after burners kicked with 8 min miles. And the last 2 mile uphill was over before I expected - also ran/shuffled the whole way. The last 1/2 mile to the finish line was/is a total battle not to walk - steeply uphill. But I overcame the demons  .
2nd in age. I have no idea where #1 was - 3 minutes in front. I never saw her.

Very good run. Most likely you were slightly overtrained and the missed workouts allowed you to recover rather than lessening your fitness.
Abebe Bikila (winner of the 1960 Olympic Marathon) underwent an appendectomy 40 days before the 1964 Olympic Marathon. He won with a new world record and beat the silver medalist by 4:18.
