It sounds like you've accepted some of the blame, which is good. Now you know what you need to change to get where you want to be. I know you are scared to step on the scale, but I'd do it just so you have a starting point. I do believe the mirror is the best way to tell the difference, but the scale will often show the smaller changes before the mirror does.
