Default Brown Rice

Recently, as per my doctor's recommendations for a weight loss plan, I switched from white jasmine rice to brown rice in my diet. I like being able to eat rice regularly but I don't like the taste of the brown rice. Do you have any ideas or suggestions for dressing up or flavoring brown rice? Preferably, I'd like something that doesn't add a whole lot of calories or fat to the rice.

One easy thing is to use chicken broth or beef broth in place of the water when you cook it. I like to add garlic and green onions to mine sometimes as well, and/or some chopped nuts.

I didn't like it at 1st also. But you get use to it. I use alittle garlic salt

I agree...Flaxseed oil, Bragg's Liquid Aminos (healthy soy sauce) & zero calorie spray butter is divine!!! I mix these bad boys with my brown rice, extra lean ground white turkey, and some diced tomatoes and it's golden I tell you!

I found that I really like Uncle Ben's Ready Rice Whole Grain Brown and Wild. I take that and the Uncle Ben's Ready Rice Brown and mix the two to cut down on the sodium.

Now if I could just make it at home to taste like that!!

I used to buy those, but I switched to the whole grain brown stuff that takes like 30 mins to cook. Its basically like brown sticky rice. Its really good when you mix it with different cooking oils and animal fats, or fry it up with soy to make some fried rice. Those packets were just too expensive and have a lot of added ingredients my body doesn't really need.

Here's another idea that I'm currently in love with. Saute a little olive oil, green onion, grated fresh ginger, some chopped dried apricots and a pinch of salt at the bottom of your rice pan. When everything is softened add the correct amount of water or broth (I like half water and half broth) and follow the instructions for cooking your rice (some call for boiling the water first, some have you add the rice right along with the water, and so forth). All the flavors of the ginger and apricots cook right into the rice. I have done this with whole wheat cous cous as well with excellent results. The possibilities are endless -- garlic, onion, shallots, dried cranberries, etc. would all work well!

Also, if anyone's having trouble getting their brown rice to cook correctly, here's a link for an no-fuss alternate cooking method that I love when I have other parts of the meal to prepare at the same time. Unfortunately, it won't work with the saute I idea described above....

Yes the packets are kinda expensive, but I do not eat it everyday and when I do eat it I only eat half a cup (half brown, half wild) so it lasts longer.

Love those cooking ideas! I am going to have to try it!

What kind of brown rice do you all buy?
