i researched on the internet. there is a website i beleive it's called Calorie Counter Database - Free Online Diet Program
you enter your weight, age and some other information and it gives you the amount of calorie you need to maintain your weight and also how much you need to lose weight. there were some other threads on these forms giving information about how to calculate your calore needs as well.
Never give up on a dream just because of the length of time it will take to achieve it. The time will pass anyway.
