Here's one interesting article I found regarding this subject at one of my favorite websites. I'm not saying I necessarily agree with everything in it, but he does lay it out pretty well with straightforward biochem explanations and brings together a lot of relevant research too. It's worth a read if you want more information about how often to eat in a day.

My rules:
1) eat real food - more vegetables, moderate meat, moderate fruits, less grains, less sugar, less vegetable oils.
2) exercise - moderate intensity cardio, sprinting, heavy lifting, dedicated stretching and mobility.
3) live - relax, de-stress, meditate.
