I aim for 1200. It works, slowly - oh so slowly - but it works. Anything more and I maintain. Less is too little for me.

Female, 40, 5-7
start wt 129
goal wt 118
current wt 120

I am 45, 407 lbs. on the 19th. I've been changing my lifestyle for five whole days, but I think it is off to a good start. Fitday calculated me between 3000 and 4000 calories to burn and I have been consuming 1800 to 2100. I don't know if that's right, yet, but I will let you all know as I progress how much is going to come off. I did learn I am a fast oxidizer with a pear body. I am sitting a lot and not a lot of movement, but not sedentary and I have added exercise to my regimen as of this week, and hope to be able to keep it up. Fitday calculated my calories at 3000-4000 a day, but I am trying to stick with taking in half what it calculates that I burn.

muffintopped, let us know how it goes! We love to hear success stories and yours look like one of the future ones. You are very motivated (I've read some of your other posts too) and that's key!
Good luck!!

Thanks. I don't want to hijack someone else's thread, but thankyou so much for the encouragement. I am looking into joining a gym that has a pool.

I'm 20.. 5'4 and around 130lbs... I'm not necessarily trying to lose weight but I want to become healthier and eat better mostly because I'm constantly sick and I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome and I have 0 energy. I have been trying to walk at least 30mins a day and do some stretching. Today I ate 980 calories...from what you guys are saying this is very low... I'm just wondering what a good calorie intake would be if you're not doing a lot of exercise because I have a horrible appetite right now... could this be the reason for my low energy?

You need to use the tools here on Fitday to figure your Base Metabolic Rate (BMR). That tells you how many calories your body is burning. Add your activity/exercise like your walking. This is your total calories burned.
If you are trying to maintain then:
BMR + Activity = calorie intake goal.

If you want to lose weight your calorie goal should be to eat 500 to 1000 less calories per day then you burn. So the equation would look like:
BMR + Activity - 1000 = calorie intake goal.

Since 1 pound of body weight equates to about 3500 calories then 1000 calorie per day deficit equals approximately 2 pounds weight loss per week.

At the moment I am trying to get my weekly average to stay below 2000. I've constantly lost 1-3lbs a week since September. This seems a bit high, but its working and most importantly, its sustainable.

Sometimes I mess up and eat way over 2000 calories, but then I just say, ok, I'll do better tomorrow.
it is what i always say !lol.......
but i am not very active so just become fatter and fatter ....
it is time to change !!
