The Importance of Beta-Sitosterol

Beta-sistosterol is similar in strength to cholesterol and is one of several plant sterols. In its natural form it can be found in fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. It is a waxy, powdery substance in appearance. It is abundant also in plants that produce oil, stinging nettle and saw palmetto. Foods such as rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, soybeans and peanut butter also contain natural beta-sistosteral. Years ago, Native Americans ate saw palmetto for the restorative powers it had for genital health problems.


Well known for the positive effect it has in reducing the swelling in benign prostatic hypertrophy, or BPH, and its cholesterol lowering effects, this simple plant derivative is being used by thousands of people worldwide for many other things. None of these claims have been proven by medical professionals, however.

Beta-sistosterol is added to certain types of margarines to reduce the effect of the cholesterol contained in the product. Yogurt is also a good source of beta-sistosterol, as it is able to limit the amount of cholesterol that enters the body. It binds to the fat molecules to limit the amount of cholesterol that is absorbed into the digestive system.

Side Effects

No known side effects have been documented concerning the use of beta-sistosterol. No adverse reactions have been identified with its use, and it appears to have no contraindications when taken along with regular medications. By all aspects, it is very safe to take and will not harm you in any way.


Eating a diet that is high in fiber will increase the benefits you can get from beta-sistosterol. It is recommended that one should take a capsule before eating a meal. One 300 milligram capsule is all that is needed as a dietary supplement. If the diet includes any of the foods that contain beta-sistosterol, fruit, nuts, canola oil and so on, you can be sure that you are getting the most from the foods that you eat along with your supplement.
