The Lowdown on Lubricants: What Should You Avoid?

Some people need a lubricant all the time, at varying times of the month, some have chronic vaginal dryness – it’s important to remember that none of these reflects a lack of desire.

Some people need a lubricant all the time, at varying times of the month, some have chronic vaginal dryness – it’s important to remember that none of these reflects a lack of desire. We don’t slut shame, and we don’t lubricant shame, either. Hormones, medications, even Benadryl, can affect the quality of your natural vaginal lubrication.

If you do find lube increases your “play-sure” there are some things to remember. Your vagina will thank you when you keep these things in mind.

Just say no to flavored lube.

It might be fun to experiment with flavors like green apple and raspberry twist but these potions contain glycerin and may leave you with a raging yeast infection. Worth it? I think not. Use a non-flavored lube and save the 31 Flavors for ice cream, not sex.

Trying to Conceive? Stay sperm-safe!

If you are trying to conceive you need to use a sperm-friendly, or “sperm safe” lubricant. Regular lubricants can negatively affect sperm motility, making it harder for the sperm to reach the egg. In clinical studies, sperm treated with Pre-seed showed significantly higher progressive motility than all other lubricants.

Give it a whirl! I liked my sperm-safe lube so much that I decided to continue using it even when we weren’t trying to conceive.

Read the packaging and ingredients list.

Get out your reading glasses and read the fine print. Water-based formulas come in two types: glycerin based formulas, while good for a short romp, get sticky and tacky after a while. They are also not recommended for women with yeast sensitivities.

For glycerin-free formulas tend not to get sticky, but don’t last as long try Blossom Organics Natural Moisturizing lubricant or Sliquid Satin.

Water-based with silicone — gives you the best of both worlds and are easily washed away with water. Try Please Cream Lubricant.

Remember, which ever lubricant you choose, the fun in the journey. Get to know what works for you, and have fun!
