Your Unhealthy Eating Habits: Are You Over Fed and Undernourished?

If you find that you eat a lot but are still undernourished, it’s time to take some action. Unhealthy eating habits can lead to weight gain, low energy and a range of health problems. To make a change, first look closely at your current diet and eating habits.

Overeating and Consequences

There are many reasons why people overeat. It may be that your mind is on other things and you are not tuned into just how much you are eating. This often happens when eating in front of the television or being lost in a conversation at the dinner table.

Besides leading to weight gain, overeating can be problematic when the foods you are consuming in large amounts are not providing adequate nutrition. It is common for people to eat too many carbs and fats. While these foods are needed by your body in moderate amounts, eating too much of them often leaves little room for fruits and vegetables. When you don’t get enough fruits and veggies in your diet, you miss out on crucial vitamins and fiber needed by your body to repair cells, provide energy and fight off viruses and bacteria.

Excessive Snacking and Malnutrition

One of the ways that people become undernourished is through excessive snacking on the wrong foods. If you always reach for potato chips, candy bars and cookies when hungry, you are filling up on empty calories. This is sometimes the case with emotional eating. These foods provide temporary comfort, but do not provide the nutrients you need to be healthy and energetic.

Replacing Unhealthy Foods with Nutritious Options

To replace unhealthy foods with nutritious options, you will want to first identify your unhealthy eating habits. If you skip breakfast and this is the reason that you eat very large lunches and dinners, you can remedy this by starting your day with a nutritious breakfast. Fruit, oatmeal, whole grain toast and cereal are healthy options. When you eat breakfast, you will find yourself less likely to snack in the late morning or overeat at lunch.

Another strategy for getting more nutrition in your diet is to still allow yourself to eat the foods that you enjoy, but in lesser quantities. If you must have bread with every meal, limit yourself to one slice to make room for vegetables and proteins. When at a restaurant, order your favorite meal, but make sure to also order a salad or other vegetables. If your meal arrives and the portion size is too large, make it a point to ask for a take-out box and pack half of your meat, rice or pasta to eat the next day.

Sometimes people are undernourished because they do not know enough about nutrition. Make it a point to learn about the nutrients in the foods you are eating. You want to avoid eating too many fats and sugars. When you choose snacks, instead of eating cake and chips, you might carry almonds, sunflower seeds or dried fruit. These foods take away your hunger and provide additional nutrition.
