Turkey Jerky as a Snack Food

Chances are that at one time or another you have either seen, heard of, or tasted turkey jerky. While it is often touted as a great alternative to traditional jerky, it is still loaded with high amounts of sodium. Therefore, the question is whether the benefits outweigh the risks. Find out for yourself before adding it to your shopping cart.

Protein Content

Turkey makes a great snack food for a number of reasons. It contains high amounts of dietary protein, which is not only important to help maintain and promote new muscle growth, but also is a highly satiating food. This means that when you eat foods that contain high amounts of protein, you feel full for a relatively long period of time, and don't have the urge to overeat at future meals. This makes it a great way to tide you over as a snack. You will not only be providing your body with the nutrients that it needs, but will also be helping prevent the development of obesity and other chronic diseases associated with this condition.

Fat Content

Withe the exception of tofu and lentils, nearly all protein sources contain some amounts of dietary fat. It is the type and amount of fat, however, that dictates whether or not the food is healthy or unhealthy for your diet. While turkey does contain some saturated fat, which has been linked to the development of cardiovascular disease, the fat is found in such limited quantities that the poultry is considered to be very low in fat. For best results, choose turkey jerky that has been made with white meat.

Salt Content

Cured foods such as turkey jerky have been found to be very high in sodium. This can be dangerous for a number of reasons. First, eating foods that are rich is sodium has been found to contribute to water retention. This can not only lead to weight gain, but also can cause other, more serious conditions. In addition, high salt diets have been found to be linked to the development of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Ideally, foods that contain high amounts of sodium should be avoided whenever possible.

Calorie Content

Before choosing turkey jerky as a snack food, you must be aware of how many calories it has. Turkey jerky is composed almost primarily from protein. Foods that contain high amounts of protein are relatively low in calories. This is due to the fact that gram per gram, protein contains only four calories, while fat contains approximately nine calories. It is no wonder that snack foods that contain high amounts of fat have been linked to the development of obesity. In contrast, since turkey jerky is a protein-rich food, it will therefore be relatively low in calories.
