People around the world are busier than ever, and often the only way to get a good meal involves eating out. But, how can you eat out and still stay healthy? This article provides 5 tips for healthy ways to eat out. Try them out today!
1. Order a Large Glass of Water
In order to cut down on fat, calories and excessive salt intake when eating out at a restaurant, it is good to drink a large glass of water before your meal. Drinking water before your meal will put a lot of fluid into your stomach, which will make you feel full--and therefore, won't be able to eat as much of your meal.
2. Eat a Salad before Your Meal
Like drinking water before your meal, starting your lunch or dinner off with a salad can be a helpful way to decrease the amount of fat or calories that you consume. Salad is loaded with fiber, which is bulky, meaning that it takes up a lot of room in the stomach, and therefore makes you feel less hungry. It is also slow digesting, meaning that it takes a long time for the food to leave your stomach and enter your digestive tract. Both of these traits of salads will prevent you from overeating at your meal, and will therefore reduce the number of calories and fat that you will consume. For best results, choose a garden salad, and ask for the dressing to be placed in a small bowl on the side.
3. Avoid Sauces
Sauces are often loaded with high amounts of fat, calories and salt, and therefore are detrimental both to your general health as well as to your weight. The worst sauces are those that are creamy--such as Alfredo or other types of creamy sauces. If your meal does come with a sauce, ask that it be served on the side. Or better yet, ask it it can be swapped for a different type of sauce, preferably one with a tomato or olive oil base.
4. Avoid Fried Food
Like Sauces, fried foods are often loaded with high amounts of fat and calories, which can wreck havoc on your health. Fried foods contain high amounts of saturated fats, which research has found to be linked to the development of cardiovascular disease, stroke and even some types of cancer. If you are ordering a fried food, request that it be fried in olive oil, which contains unsaturated fats that actually promote good health. If this is not possible, skip the fried food altogether.
5. Skip Dessert
This is probably the hardest tip to follow in this article. Some people have a very serious weakness to sweets. But, like fried foods, sugary desserts can contain saturated fats, which as stated above can lead to the development of numerous very serious diseases. For great health, it is best to skip them altogether.
