The Nutrition of Multi-Bran Cereal

Cereal is a favorite breakfast food in the United States. It comes in a variety of flavors, brands and types. Most of the cereals found in grocery stores are high in sugar and other unhealthy ingredients. One of the healthiest is multi-bran. This cereal has a great number of nutrients that are beneficial for maintaining good health. If you're looking for a better way to eat breakfast, then consider multi-bran cereal. Here's a look at the nutrition of multi-bran cereal and how it's good for your well-being.

Types of Bran

Bran is the leftover byproduct of grains. Instead of discarding this byproduct, it's used to make various foods. Bran cereal is one of those foods. Bran comes from many types of grains including oats, rice and wheat. A multi-bran cereal contains 3 or more grains. This is a list of the most commonly found types used in multi-bran cereal and how they benefit you:

  • Oat bran helps lower cholesterol.
  • Wheat bran is high in insoluble fiber. Insoluble fiber keeps bowels functioning normally.
  • Rice bran is high in antioxidants that fight free radicals in the body.

Nutrition of Multi-Bran

There are more than 20 vitamins and minerals found in multi-bran cereal. These nutrients include vitamin A, vitamin B12, vitamin D, iron, manganese and zinc. This cereal also contains high levels of folate and potassium. Folate is highly recommended for pregnant women. It's commonly known as folic acid and helps pregnancies develop normally. Potassium helps develop healthy bone and muscle tissue.

High in Fiber

Multi-bran cereal is high in fiber. Fiber helps prevent constipation. It's also good for lowering the risk of heart disease, cholesterol and diabetes. Some studies show that fiber keeps the stomach and intestines free of bacteria. This bacteria leads to ulcers and other gastrointestinal issues. Fiber is also good for regulating irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS. In order to regulate IBS, a high fiber diet may be introduced. This diet can include bran or foods containing bran. If you have IBS, it's best to speak with a physician before going on any type of high-fiber diet.

High in Protein

Protein is another important benefit of cereal, especially multi-bran varieties. Protein strengthens muscle tissue, helps decrease heart-related problems and wards off hunger. The protein from bran is better for your health than eating red meats. Red meat is shown to increase the risk of colon cancer, a disease that kills a great number of people every year.

Weight Loss Benefits and Good Carbohydrates

Bran cereal is great for weight loss. The fiber and protein in multi-bran cereal keeps you fuller longer than other cereals. This helps you snack less on unhealthy foods throughout the day. Multi-bran cereal is also a source of good carbohydrates. These carbohydrates provide you with the energy to exercise for longer periods. Instead of eating a sugary snack, eat a bowl of multi-bran cereal for energy.

Multi-bran cereals are eaten more today than in the past. A good number of people have discovered the health benefits that this cereal provides. By adding bran cereals to your diet, you can lose weight, keep fit and increase energy.
