The Nutrition of Chokeberry

A chokeberry bush grows naturally in North America. This plant develops hearty and wholesome red and black berries. If you've ever eaten a chokeberry, then you know how sweet and delicious the red variety is. Black chokeberries have a somewhat bitter taste. Both berry varieties have a good number of nutrition. Check out this nutrition guide to chokeberries.

Vitamin A and Vitamin C

Chokeberries have the antioxidant properties of vitamins A and C. They help fight against free radicals in your body. These free radicals cause premature aging, cancers and other problems. Vitamin C is an important nutrient you need for good health. It helps your body fight off illness, such as a cold or flu. Along with these vitamins, chokeberries have large amounts of phytochemicals. These antioxidants work with vitamin A to keep your body safe from illness.

Vitamin K

Vitamin K plays an essential role in your blood's ability to clot. Without it, you could easily bruise or become injured. Vitamin K also may influence bone health as you age. Some studies show that vitamin K helps keep bones strong in older people. However, be aware that consuming vitamin K with blood thinners may interfere with the drugs ability to work properly. You should talk with your doctor about whether chokeberries and other foods containing high amounts of vitamin K are safe to eat.

Calories, Fat and Cholesterol

Chokeberries are a nutritious way to lose weight because they are low in fat and calories. Like most berries, they can be eaten at anytime without the worries of gaining weight. Chokeberries also make great snacks if you're watching your cholesterol levels. Unlike potato chips and cakes, chokeberries keep your arteries free of this unhealthy fatty deposit. Cholesterol harms you by clogging up your arteries. Stroke, high blood pressure and heart attack are all problems associated with high cholesterol.

Fiber and Calcium

Fiber is needed by your digestive system to prevent constipation, colon cancer and other problems. Fiber is also known to fight against heart disease and stroke. Calcium is very important to bone health. You need this beneficial mineral to maintain strong bones in your later years. Diseases like osteoporosis can affect your bone's ability to resist breakage and damage.

Carbohydrates and Natural Sugar

Chokeberries have good carbohydrates. These carbohydrates are easily turned into energy by your body. It was once encouraged to take all carbohydrates out of your diet. But, recent studies show that there are good carbohydrates as well as bad. Good carbohydrates are found in fruits and vegetables and should be eaten every day.

The natural sugars found in chokeberries are better for you than regular snacks. A chokeberry is perfect for topping off ice cream and frozen yogurt. Chokeberry syrup is also great for pancakes and waffles. The natural sugar is used by your body as energy.

Before you ignore this nutritious berry, give it a try. You'll find that chokeberries are the perfect fruit for your diet, nutrition and health.
