How to Diet for Better Energy

Better energy is the goal of many people. In a fast-paced life filled with responsibilities and stress, paying attention to your diet can make a big difference in your energy level. Here are a few ways that you can boost your energy through your diet.

Eat Regular Meals

You might skip a meal here and there and not think much of it. However, going for long periods without eating can significantly reduce your energy level. One common habit you may have is skipping breakfast. Your body has been without fuel in the after-dinner hours, during sleep and then it has to wait until lunch time for food. Eating a healthy breakfast can significantly increase your energy level. Studies show that people who eat breakfast tend to be more alert and perform better in their daily tasks.

In addition to eating breakfast, be sure to eat several meals per day. Three meals a day and a snack are usually sufficient to keep you energized throughout the day. Try not to go more than four or five hours without eating. Carry a plastic bag with cut carrots, pumpkin seeds or almonds for snacking.

Eat High-Energy Foods

In general, you want to make sure to eat a well-balanced meal. Your meals should consist of a combination of proteins, carbohydrates and healthy fats. You can eat from each of these groups at each meal or spread them out throughout the day if combining these foods creates digestive issues. Complex carbohydrates such as whole grains or pastas will give you energy and are preferable to snacks that contain sugar or fat. Yogurt, bran muffins, and nuts are all snacks that offer lasting energy.

Drink Water

One of the reasons that people suffer from low energy throughout the day is dehydration. Your body consists largely of water. It needs 7 to 8 glasses of water a day to perform its basic function of digestion and transporting nutrients that energize you. When you go for long periods without drinking water, you may experience fatigue.

Another habit that may get you in trouble is drinking lots of caffeinated drinks. Cola, coffee and even excessive amounts of black tea can dehydrate you. You may be drinking coffee to get a boost of energy. But after adding sugar and cream you will likely experience a temporary boost followed by low energy. Whenever you are looking to increase your energy level, drink water. If you do not like the taste of water, add lemon. Or drink fresh squeezed juices with no added sugar. These drinks will help to keep you hydrated.

You can better your energy level by making a few changes. Eat regularly. Do not go for long periods without food. Be sure to eat breakfast. Avoid high fat and sugary foods and drinks. Eat complex carbs and proteins. Be sure to drink water and avoid caffeinated drinks. The combination of these habits should help to energize you.
