As a child, you were probably always told that eating vegetables was one of the best things that you can do for your body. Vegetables contain some of the essential vitamins and minerals that you need to live a healthy lifestyle. These vitamins and minerals also help your body complete normal functions and fight off illness and other problems that the body faces. However, all vegetables are not created equal. In fact, the way that you prepare vegetables could change the amount of vitamins and minerals that you're taking into your body. While some people prefer to eat vegetables raw and others prefer to steam them, there are many who like to boil them. If you're one of these people, there are a few reasons that you should be careful that you don't overboil your vegetables. Check out these 3 reasons:

Reason 1: Vitamin and Mineral Loss

When you boil a pot of water in anticipation of boiling vegetables, you probably don't think that you're doing anything wrong. But if you manage to overboil vegetables, the truth is that you are losing many of the key vitamins and minerals in them. This occurs because many of the vitamins and minerals will seep out into the boiling water. You end up dumping this water out or removing the vegetables, leaving all of those vitamins and minerals back in the water. If you insist on boiling your vegetables over steaming them, try not to overboil them. You should also use the water that you have left over in the pot to create a gravy. Or you can simply use it to pour back over your vegetables in order to get all of the vitamins and minerals back onto your plate.

Reason 2: It Changes the Taste

There's a reason that kids don't like to eat their vegetables. They don't always taste good. Unfortunately, this could be more of a reflection of the preparation of the vegetables than the vegetables themselves. If you're planning on boiling vegetables, don't overboil them because this makes them taste boring and bland. As a result, you won't be tempted to eat nearly as many vegetables. This will stop you from getting the vitamins and minerals that they provide and will also leave you searching for junk food to eat later.

Reason 3: It Changes Their Texture

Vegetables that are prepared properly should taste fresh. If you're eating carrots, they should be crunchy and taste straight from the garden. Same goes for green beans, asparagus and any other vegetable that you like to prepare. Overboiling your vegetables can leave them mushy and unappealing. To avoid this, don't overboil them.

Overboiling vegetables can prevent you from eating as healthy as you should be. Try to avoid overboiling your vegetables or, better yet, start steaming your vegetables, to make sure you're getting all the nutritional benefits that you can.
