Be Aware of These 4 Organic Fruit Concerns

Organic fruit has never been more popular. Hundreds of thousands of Americans have joined the bandwagon of organic living. More and more people are turning to organic food when it comes to their daily diet. In fact, the catch phrase, “do not worry, it’s organic” has become so popular that you’ll hear it anywhere you go.

The advantages of eating organic fruits are countless. Organic fruits are high in nutritional value, good in taste, and free from harmful chemicals like pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides. It is important to know, however, that organic fruits also raise some concerns that all consumers should be aware of. Here are some of them.

1. Cost

The most obvious downside to eating organic fruits is the cost. Most people who consume organic-produced fruits contend that the added price is worth the benefits that you can get from them. However, some people who are not as financially comfortable are not able to afford the expensive cost of organic fruits, which are usually up to 40 percent pricier than regular-produced. The heavy price tag can be attributed from the fact that organic farming yields smaller quantities of production. Strict regulation on organic farming is another cause for the elevated price. As the demand for organic fruits increases, production will rise, and price will hopefully decrease in the future.

2. Safety

It is true that organic farming is promoted as the safe alternative to traditional farming because the use of synthetic pesticides and other harmful chemicals are prohibited. However, the pesticides used for organic farming, which are derived from certain plants, have not yet been proven as safe either. Shipping is another concern that arises when safety is discussed. Shipping of smaller quantities of production to farther destinations is questioned by scientists and specialists. Some deem that non-organic products produced locally may be safer than those that come from farther areas.

3. Production

Production of organic fruit is not as extensive as that of non-organic produce. Not only does this mean an increase in price, it also means insufficient supply for organic fruits. The growing demand for these fruits is hardly met. In fact, many organic fruits are already sold out even before they reach the market. This can be problematic for consumers who wish to consume organic produce only.

4. Fad

Many people see organic fruit consumption as only a fad. Eating healthy due to wrong reasons is not a good habit. Not only that, since organic food has become a fad, many sellers have taken advantage of this. They even use it as a marketing ploy to make it appear that the organic fruits have been sold out. Worse, some sellers in an attempt to sell their fruits for higher prices, claim that their products are organic, even when they are not.

There are many concerns revolving around the consumption of organic fruits. However, with the countless benefits people can get from eating this food, many do not mind the disadvantages associated with it. Just be careful when buying organic fruit.
