Agave Nectar Syrup: What Is It?

Agave nectar syrup is being used today as an alternative to sugar. Because of the calories contained in sugar and the negative effects that can take place within your body as a result of using it, you may have considered using agave nectar syrup. But before you do, you need to know exactly what agave nectar syrup is, what it contains and how it may or may not be able to help you.

What Agave Nectar Syrup Is

Grown in Mexico, agave plants are the main source of agave nectar syrup. Agave nectar syrup is actually found in the core of the agave plant. The syrup is taken out of the plant and then heated to create simple sugars that can then be used as an alternative to table sugar. Though different types of agave nectar syrup result in different levels of fructose and glucose, most agave nectar syrups contain more fructose than they do glucose. This results in a sweetness when used in different foods and drinks. Agave nectar syrup is approximately 1.5 times sweeter than sugar. This means that, theoretically, you can use less of it to sweeten your food or drink. It has also been used as a substitute for honey.

It May Not Be as Good as It Sounds

Though agave plants have been used for years to produce tequila in Mexico, agave nectar syrup is still a relatively new product. In fact, only certain types of agave nectar syrup have been approved for use in the United States by the FDA. Because of this, there are some things to consider before you start using it. For starters, agave nectar syrup may result in high blood pressure and can change your blood sugar dramatically. It can also cause heart disease, and people using agave nectar syrup may not necessarily be cutting calories from their diet when they use it. Because it's not as sweet as some other sugar alternatives, you may end up using just as much agave nectar syrup in food and drinks as you would sugar. This can lead you to eat just as many calories. You want to consider how agave nectar syrup could potentially affect your health before you use it.

The Truth about Agave Nectar Syrup

The problem with agave nectar syrup is that doctors and health experts don't know enough about it yet to tell you if it's definitely good or bad for you. They continue to do studies on agave nectar syrup to try and find out if it's really better for you than sugar. Because of this, you should continue to monitor news about agave nectar syrup to see whether or not it might be a safe alternative to sugar. If you do want to use it as an alternative to sugar, try and use it in moderation to prevent it from having a drastic effect on your health. In the future, agave nectar syrup may be considered a great alternative to sugar. But for now, most of the studies done on how it could affect your health provide more questions than answers.
