6 Ways to Subside Food Cravings

Food cravings are one of the most difficult things to deal with when switching to a new way of eating. Most of the population is addicted to either salt or sugar, and both can be extremely difficult to deal with. Though our bodies become addicted to things like sugar and salt, many food cravings are more emotionally based, and those are often the hardest to beat. You may have tried changing your eating habits before and just couldn't quite kick the cravings, but with a few tips and tricks you can subside your cravings and soon will over that craving hump and feeling amazing.

1. Gum

This is one of the most inexpensive ways to stop food cravings in their tracks. Choose a low-sugar gum in a flavor you love and keep it handy at all times. If you pop a piece of gum in your mouth instead of your favorite sweet, you will notice the craving start to subside within minutes, and after a bit will no longer have that craving.

2. Exercise

If you're working toward a healthier lifestyle, you're likely already exercising. Working out for at least 30 minutes a day can set your whole day up for success, including combating food cravings. When your endorphins kick into high gear, you feel good about yourself and this encourages you to continue making healthy choices. This will have a domino effect the longer you keep on your plan.

3. The Buddy System

If you start to slip or are beating yourself up trying to resist a craving, call a friend or grab a co-worker for a walk. Even if it's just a couple of laps around the office, it will break that stress and allow you a few moments to forget about the craving and restore your positive feelings.

4. Sleep

You can't just lie down and take a nap whenever a craving hits, but when you get plenty of sleep you're less likely to have cravings in the first place. When you're tired, your brain is looking for energy and comfort. That often translates to food. When you're well rested, your brain is communicating better and will leave you feeling energized and less likely to crave.

5. Everything in Moderation

No foods are off limits, but it's the excessive amounts that get us. If you love chocolate, clear out everything except one ounce of amazingly dark chocolate. Dark chocolate has a lot of health benefits and one ounce per day is recommended. If you don't trust yourself with a bag of chocolate in the house, don't purchase more than one square.

6. Get It out of the House

If your house is packed with all the foods you're trying to get over, clear them out. Toss them out or donate them to a food pantry. You need to get your family and spouse on board, so make this a new adventure you do together.

You can kick your food cravings and after a few days you'll feel more energized and the cravings will subside. Don't beat yourself up when you slip, simply brush yourself off and continue on your voyage.
