Studies show that a central reason why people pay money to go to the fair is for the fair foods. Fair food tends to be deep fried and greasy and covered in sugar or cheese. While most food that you will find at the fair is not ideal for any health conscious person, some fair foods are worse than others. Modern fairs typically take foods that were already considered unhealthy, such as chocolate bars and processed snack foods, and deep fry them. This article describes 4 fair foods that should be avoided at all costs.
Deep Fried Candy Bars
Deep fried candy bars have become an increasingly popular fair food. Candy bars, such as Snickers, Mars Bars and Heath bars, are being deep fried in funnel cake and pancake batter. They are often paired with a sugary dipping sauce (such as caramel or chocolate). A deep fried candy bar can contain anywhere from 700 to 1000 calories and 40 to 60 grams of fat (over 50 percent saturated fat). If you want dessert, try a frozen banana dipped in chocolate and nuts. While a frozen banana also contains fat and sugar, it also has nutritional value like vitamin E and potassium.
Foot Long Hot Dogs
You probably know that hot dogs are not the healthiest meal, but at the fair they are even worse. A regular sized hot dog contains approximately 260 calories and 19 grams of fat. A foot long hot dog at the fair packs approximately 460 calories and 26 grams of fat. This doesn’t include the condiments like cheese or mayonnaise that you might top your hot dog with. A better fair food choice would be a pork loin sandwich with ketchup instead of mayonnaise.
Cave-man Turkey Legs
While you might be thinking that turkey sounds like a healthy option, this is not true at the fair. Cave-man turkey legs are fried and have about five times the amount of turkey that should be consumed in a meal. A cave-man turkey leg contains approximately 1400 calories and 46 grams of fat. This is as many calories as some people consume in an entire day. If you want to eat turkey at the fair, opt for a smaller portion of turkey that is not “cave-man” size.
If you don’t know what a “pick licker” is, that is probably for the best. Pig lickers aren’t found at all state fairs; they are most popular in the Midwest. Pig lickers are strips of bacon dipped in chocolate. A serving size of pig lickers is four or five strips of bacon drizzled in chocolate. A serving of pig lickers contains approximately 690 calories and 30 grams of fat.
If you are going to the fair for the food, try something more traditional like a caramel apple or curly fries. You could even eat an elephant ear and be much better off than eating any of the aforementioned fair foods to avoid. A general rule to follow when eating fair food is to avoid anything that begins with the words “deep fried” or “foot long”.
