4 Healthy Foods to Eat When on Vacation

When you're on vacation, finding healthy foods to eat can be a challenge. If you are like most people, when you are on vacation you probably don't want to go to the supermarket and buy food to cook in your hotel. A large component of most vacations is eating out and indulging in new foods or foods that you don't generally give yourself permission to eat. Eating while traveling doesn't have to mean that you also take a vacation from your diet. You can find healthy foods anywhere, you just have to look for them. Here are four healthy foods to eat when on vacation:

1. Whole Grains

Whole grains are a healthy food to eat for any meal or snack. For example, if you are in a buffet line on a cruise, you can fill up with whole grain oatmeal or whole grain toast. If you are dining out, you can ask for whole grain pasta instead of white or egg flour pasta. Whole grains are high in fiber, so you won't have to eat as much to feel full. Whole grains also contain more nutrients, because they contain more of the wheat germ, which is processed out of the whiter, softer breads.

2. Yogurt

One meal that can really sabotage your healthy eating routine is breakfast. Because you are on vacation, you might be tempted to order a Belgian waffle with whipped cream and glazed fruit topping. This kind of breakfast can contain more 600 calories and 20 grams of fat (for just one waffle). A healthier food to order off of the breakfast menu is yogurt. Yogurt contains protein and is generally low in calories. Yogurt is also available on almost any breakfast menu, and sometimes it is listed as a side dish. If possible, ask for low-fat yogurt and a side of fruit and granola. This way you will be eating healthy without feeling like you're depriving yourself.

3. Grilled Meats

Another way to eat healthy while on vacation is to order your meat grilled instead of fried. When dinning out, you will be sure to find a grilled salmon or other fish option. Grilled fish is a healthy vacation food and it provides you with essential omega-3 fatty acids, which are important for brain function and mood. You will also get the same iron and protein as other meats, but you will avoid the extra fat. If possible, order your grilled meat with a salad, side or vegetable soup.

4. Veggie Burgers

If your family or other people you're vacationing with insist on dining at a greasy burger establishment, you can lessen the damage to your diet by ordering a veggie burger instead of a hamburger. Veggie burgers have become an increasingly popular menu item. Some restaurants even make them from scratch with whole grains, beans and vegetables. Order your veggie burger without mayonnaise or other creamy dressings. Instead, opt for a salsa or mustard-based topping.
