5 Healthy Living Tips for Twenty-Something Women

Your twenties are a time that are essential to your long-term health--you can either live hard, or engage in moderate, healthy living. For best results, be sure to start an exercise program, eat right, ditch the cigarettes, drink alcohol in moderation, and find a great support group.

Start an Exercise Routine

One of the most important healthy living tips that you can keep in mind if you are a twenty-something year old woman is to start an exercise routine. Exercising on a regular basis is not only a great way to help you keep your weight in check, but it also can successfully help in the prevention of a number of serious, life-long conditions. For example, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and even some types of cancers have all been linked to inactivity. And remember that cardiovascular exercise and strength training both can provide their own, unique benefits--therefore, in order to obtain benefits to your general health, you must engage in at least moderate amounts of both of these kinds of exercise.

Eat Right

Next, eating right is essential to helping maintain your weight, as well as preventing a number of chronic diseases. Diets that are high in fat, calories, and sodium can have a serious impact on your health in the future. For best results, stick to fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats such as chicken and fish. When choosing red meats, look for cuts that are as lean as possible.

Ditch the Cigarettes

Ditching a smoking habit at a young age is also crucial to great life-long health. There is no doubt that smoking can have serious, deadly effects. However, research has found that smokers who drop the habit typically have the same lung capacity and cancer risk as non-smokers five years after their last puff. If you are a smoker, quit immediately. Consult with your doctor or nurse in order to create a quit-plan for best results.

Drink in Moderation

Like cigarettes, alcohol can have serious health implications when abused. Long-term alcohol abuse can lead to weight gain, cardiovascular and liver disease, and mental impairment. Try to limit your alcoholic drinks to under two per week. Remember that if you must have alcohol, there are some choices that are better than others. Typically, wines are considered the healthiest alcohols due to their high antioxidant content. In contrast, sugary mixed drinks do not provide any nutritional quality, and may, in fact, further hamper your health.

Have a Great Support Group

Finally, while in your twenties, it is important to have a great support group that you can turn to in times of need. Break-ups, lay-offs, and other difficult life experiences are common during this time, and it is essential to have at least one person you can talk to when you need to. This person doesn't necessarily need to be a family member, but ideally he or she should have known you long enough to have a general idea of who you are as a person.
