10 Surprising Health Benefits of Cannabidiol

While much of the focus on legalizing marijuana regards THC, tetrahydrocannabinol, the chemical compound responsible for the famous “high,” what is less talked about is cannabidiol (CBD).

CBD is a nonpsychoactive chemical compound found in marijuana. It is said that CBD is an effective anti-inflammatory and antidepressant. Unlike THC, there is no “high.” Medically, CBD is responsible for the reduction of seizures in epilepsy. High Times reports that CBD has additional potential benefits as well:

1. It benefits cigarette addiction. In a study, people using CBD reduced how many cigarettes they smoked.


2. Prevent/cure acne by inhibiting the production of oil that causes acne to form.


3. Prevented diabetes by inhibiting a certain cytokine that is responsible for various autoimmune diseases, but CBD didn’t have a direct effect on blood glucose levels.


4. Fibromyalgia treatments don’t really work and rely on anti-inflammatory medications, opioid pain medications and corticosteroids, which can be harmful. In a study, patients using CBD saw a greater reduction in pain and symptoms of fibromyalgia than those using the usual treatment protocol.


5. CBD seems to slow the growth of Mad Cow disease.


6. Post-traumatic stress disorder sufferers that ingested CBD as anti-anxiety and anti-inflammatory effect, slowing everything and calming them down.


7. Schizophrenia patients may benefit from CBD as the treatment has fewer side effects than medications that are usually prescribed.


8. Crohn’s disease affects the bowels but CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties seem to help with bowel diseases and disorders.


9. Multiple Sclerosis patients may benefit from CBD as studies have shown that the compound may reduce various aspects of the disease.


10. Insomnia is a prevalent problem but research has found that CBD likely helps with the condition. One of the few side effects of CBD is tiredness so High Times recommends seeking out a strain like Indica and CBD-heavy strains.
