Calculating your body mass index (BMI) is one of the best ways to determine whether you are at a healthy weight. The risk of weight-related diseases and illnesses is higher for those who are over their ideal weight. Heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke and arthritis are some of the common problems associated with an unhealthy weight.
Calculate Your Body Mass Index
BMI is the primary tool that is used to assess a person’s weight in relation to her height. A person’s fat percentage can also be measured using the Body Mass Index. Depending where your BMI measurement lies in the chart, you will be able to assess if you at a healthy weight or not. To calculate:
- Multiply your weight (in pounds) by 705
- Divide the product by your height (in inches)
- Then divide the answer by your height again (in inches)
The recommended healthy weight range is 19 - 24.9. If it is less than the recommended range, you may need to consult your doctor or a nutrition expert. Being underweight is sometimes a symptom of a medical problem. A BMI that is 25 - 29.9 falls in the overweight category. However, factors like the measurement of your waistline or other heath problems you may have will conclude if it is still a healthy weight or not. A BMI of 30 or higher is in the obese category and considered unhealthy. Many illnesses and health complications may develop in a person who is obese. If you find that your BMI is in this range, consult with your doctor as soon as possible.
Measure Your Waistline
Your waistline can also be an indication of whether or not you are at a healthy weight. Using a tape measure, determine your waist size. The ideal measurement for a healthy waist is less than 40 inches for men and less than 35 inches for women
Regular exercise, eating healthy foods and living a healthy lifestyle will maintain your healthy weight. If your weight is unhealthy and you have set a goal for yourself to lose or gain weight, it is advised to consult your doctor before you make any changes to your eating habits or take up a very rigorous exercise routine. It is always best to consider all the factors that may affect your health if you plan to make any drastic actions regarding your lifestyle.
Many are still unhappy with their weight even though they are at a healthy weight level because of what we see in society. It cannot be denied that when you see a model in a magazine or TV advertisement, the way that they look is perceived to be the “ideal weight.” However, if your weight is healthy and have plenty of energy and feel good when doing activities that you want to do, you are most likely living a healthy life.
