Keeping weight off is often a more difficult task than losing weight. To remain slim permanently, you have to maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly, and this means that you have to adopt a whole new lifestyle. Many people fail to keep weight off because they go back to their normal eating habits and unhealthy lifestyles after they have completed their weight loss programs. If you want to maintain your ideal weight for a long time, you should try to avoid these things:
1) Crash Dieting
Crash dieting is effective in helping you lose weight in a short period of time. However, it is not a good dieting method if you want to lose weight permanently. When your body is losing weight rapidly, it is actually losing water and carbohydrates, not fats. Fast weight loss makes the body think that it is starving, and it will respond by slowing down its metabolic rate. With decreased metabolism, your body will not be able to burn calories efficiently. When you return to your normal diet, your body will try to store as much food in the fat cells as possible, in fear that it will experience another “famine”. This will lead to rapid weight gain.
2) Overeating
You should only consume enough food to satisfy your hunger. There is no need to eat until you are overly full. Also, you should bear in mind that your brain takes some time to regulate appetite after food is consumed, and you should try to eat at a slower pace to give your body enough time to know that it has received enough food. If you eat fast, you will be consuming more food than you need to become full.
3) Skipping Breakfast
In your endeavor to stay slim, you may decide to eat less by skipping breakfast. Breakfast is a very important meal because it gives you the energy you need to perform your daily duties. If you skip breakfast, you will feel hungrier in the morning, and you may not be able to control your craving for food during lunchtime. As such, you may end up making unhealthy food choices. Studies have shown that those who eat breakfast regularly are more successful in keeping weight off.
4) Drinking Soda
Drinking soda regularly can increase your daily calorie intake by 360 or more. Beverages, such as fruit juices, diet soda and whole milk, can also add unnecessary calories to your diet. The best thing to do is to drink a lot of water. You can also replace whole milk with skim or soy milk.
5) Depriving Yourself of Sleep
According to experts, you will be able to stick to your diet plan better if you get enough sleep everyday. If you do not get enough sleep, you will most likely feel tired the next day. When you are tired, you will be tempted to eat more to replenich your energy. Also, you may find that it is difficult to control what you eat when you are physically and mentally exhausted. As such, you may end up gaining more weight. It is advisable that you sleep at least 8 hours a day.
