4 Ways to Keep off That Dreaded Winter Weight

Winter weight gain is often a dreaded part of the colder months of the year. Sometimes it seems that keeping the weight off is impossible during these months. However, by keeping some basic guidelines in mind, you'll not only keep the weight off, but you may actually lose some weight in the process.

1. Join a Gym

Joining a gym is one of the best ways that you can prevent the winter weight from slowly sneaking up on you. Gyms often run great deals during the winter months to bring in prospective new clients, and if you join at the right time, you may be able to receive several perks (such as free personal training sessions, group exercise classes or other benefits). One of the best parts of joining a gym is that even though you may not be familiar with a specific piece of exercise equipment, there will always be someone available to help you understand how to use it properly.

2. Take a Class

As stated above, gyms often offer several group exercise classes during that winter months. These classes are another great way to help keep the winter weight off. Sometimes, it can be difficult to motivate yourself to go to the gym. But, if you know that there is a class full of your friends and exercise partners, it will be more difficult to blow your workout off. Ask gym employees, friends and even other exercisers about some of the classes. You should be able to easily find a class that sounds perfect for you.

3. Train for an Event

Another great way to help keep the winter weight off is by finding an event, and training for it. Researchers have found that individuals who simply decide to start exercising are less likely to remain exercising six months after the start of their program. However, those who choose an event and train for it have a specific planned day to look forward to and are more likely to keep up with their fitness and exercise plans. No matter if you want to run a marathon or walk a 5K, there is sure to be something in the neighborhood that will make you excited for exercise.

4. Learn to Cook

Finally, one of the biggest contributors to holiday weight gain is improper food choices. Often during the winter months, you are either so busy or come home so late that you either grab something from the drive-through or the freezer. Unfortunately, these foods are typically loaded with lots of fat and salt. Instead of choosing these foods, why not learn how to make easy, healthy meals that can be made ahead of time and stored in your freezer for later use? Look in your newspaper or inquire at your local grocery store. There are typically a number of community education classes running during the winter months that focus on making healthy meals in a hurry.
