Get Fit 24 Hours a Day (Not Just When You Work Out)

How much time do you spend at the gym? An hour? Two? That's awesome, as your gym time is vital to help you hit your muscles, work your cardiovascular system, and burn fat / calories. But the time you spend at the gym isn't enough to get truly fit. To see the results you want, it's going to take all the other 22-23 hours a day.

Here's how to get fit 24 hours a day:

  • Burn more calories — It's actually a lot easier than you'd think! All you have to do is walk and move around more, and you'll burn more calories. For example, instead of sending an email to your coworker, get up and walk to their desk to talk. Instead of sitting down to watch TV, stand and walk around, or do some simple exercises. Instead of spending your lunch break at a bar, take a walk around the block. The more you move, the more calories you burn.
  • Sleep well — Your fitness depends a great deal on the quality of your sleep. Poor sleep can not only slow your metabolism, but it can make you more prone to snacking and poor eating habits. A good night's sleep can boost your metabolism and help you to have the energy to hit your workout hard.
  • Stand — Sitting not only slows down your metabolism, it also weakens your core muscles and makes you feel lazy. If you can stand more at work, you'll burn more calories and keep your muscles strong. By standing more, you'll also focus on improving your posture, which will translate into better posture when at the gym.
  • Do more — This may sound too vague, but the truth is that it's not. Instead of sitting around and relaxing all evening long, why not actually DO something? Play a game with your kids, take the dog for a walk, help the spouse clean the house, or spend time on one of your active hobbies. Heck, get to the park and play a pick-up game of basketball, football, or baseball. Make it a point to NOT sit around all the time, but do more. The more you move around, the more calories you burn.
  • Be mindful of your posture — The way you sit, stand, and lie down can affect your musculature and your joint health. In order to get through those tough gym workouts, you need to take care of your back, knees, shoulders, hips, ankles, elbows, and wrists. Make sure you sit upright at work, and your elbows and wrists are comfortable as you type. Keep your knees in a proper position as you sit, and sleep in the positions that will keep your back, hips, neck, and knees comfortable. Your posture plays a vital role in your health and athletic performance, so take care of your body by having proper posture!
  • Cycle and walk more — If you're in no hurry to meet your friends for drinks or hit up the grocery store, why not walk or cycle? It will take a bit longer, but you'll burn more calories that way. It's a good way to give your metabolism a boost!

A few simple tricks, but they'll go A LONG WAY toward keeping you fit not just during your gym workout, but all day long.
