Benefits of a Beach Workout
Training at the beach on a regular basis can help you maintain your motivation to workout, since the sights and sounds are never exactly the same. Depending on the time of day that you workout, there may be a large crowd of people at the beach or you may have it all to yourself. Your workouts will be more exciting when there are other people around, since you can watch them having fun while you are getting some exercise.
Working out at the beach also gets you out into the fresh air, instead of having to train inside of a hot gym or health club. You also have the luxury of being able to go for a quick dip in the ocean after your workout. You may not be able to train at the beach each time you exercise, but when your workouts start to become boring the beach is a great alternative.
Types of Beach Workouts
If you enjoy training in the water, surfing is a fun way to get some exercise. You will work your arms and legs when you paddle in the ocean, and your abdominal muscles and legs when you are standing and bending on the surfboard to try and stay on a wave. If you have never tried surfing before, make sure that you take some lessons before you attempt to navigate the waves on your own.
Swimming is an exciting way to train at the beach, but only if you are in good shape and are comfortable swimming against an ocean current. There are many dangers during this exercise, so make sure you only swim when there is a lifeguard on duty and the water is not too choppy. You can also ride the waves and do some body surfing to perform a fun workout in the water.
Another popular activity to try at the beach is volleyball. You will need at least one other person to play, and preferably at least three more since you can then play a few games of two-on-two volleyball. Jumping up and down in the sand will exercise your legs and give you a great cardiovascular workout.
Running is a beach workout that you can do on your own or with a training partner. Running tends to be a bit boring when you train on a road or at a track, but at the beach the sounds of the ocean and the various activities that are going on around you make this exercise method much more enjoyable. Try to run in the shallow water to make the activity more difficult. You can also run up and down any nearby sand dunes to increase the intensity of your workout. When you are done with your run, go for a quick swim in the ocean to cool off.
