Alternating beach lunges are a great exercise that strengthen and tone both the muscles of the lower body, as well as those of the core. Once you have mastered the basic exercise, try performing the alternating beach lunges with a set of dumbbells for a more challenging routine. Alternating beach lunges are a great exercise that tone and strengthen the muscles of the lower body. In addition, unlike basic lunges, alternating beach lunges force you to incorporate the muscles of your core, thereby giving you a more complete total body workout. In addition to increasing strength, adding more muscle to your body can help to increase your metabolic rate, thereby helping to boost calorie burn and aiding in your attempts to lose weight. After a few weeks of performing this exercise, you'll have legs to die for!

Positioning Your Body for Alternating Beach Lunges

Before performing the alternating beach lunges, it is essential that you position your body properly. Start by clearing an area on the ground, making sure there are no dumbbells or other pieces of equipment nearby. Stand tall, with your feet evenly spaced under your hips, and your toes facing forward. Make sure that your hips are over your knees, and your shoulders are likewise over your hips. You should be in a straight line from head to foot.

Performing Alternating Beach Lunges

Now that you are positioned properly, you can start performing the exercise. Start by taking a few deep breaths. As you inhale your breath, step your right foot approximately three feet in front of your body, making sure that the foot is still facing forward. Slowly bend your knees and lower your left knee towards the ground. As you exhale your breath, use the muscles in your core and lower body to lift yourself back up to the starting position. Carefully step your right foot back under your body. Do the same maneuver again, but this time step our with your left foot. Do at least ten lunges with each foot, being sure to alternate which foot you step with before taking a short break. Do at least two sets of ten repetitions in order to achieve optimal results.

Increasing the Intensity of Alternating Beach Lunges

One great way to increase the intensity of alternating beach lunges is by holding a set of dumbbells in your hands while performing the exercise. Doing this increases the weight that your legs and core must work against, increasing the difficulty of the exercise. When attempting this be sure to start with a light set of weights and gradually increase the weight of the dumbbells that you are using. You'll be amazed at how a slight change in weight can really affect your workout!
